The Crime Desk: President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said that there has been an estimated financial loss of 300 to 400 million dollars due to instability in the garment sector after August 5. He said this at a press conference held at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara on Saturday (October 19).
Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said, considering the stability of law and order, several work orders were transferred to other countries at that time. But as the situation normalizes, international retailers and brands are coming back.
He said that many entrepreneurs in the garment sector are unable to survive due to various obstacles. BGMEA has been saying for a long time that there is a need for a safe exit policy for these entrepreneurs.
The BGMEA president said, “In the last two months, we have had to pay a heavy price due to prolonged labor unrest in the garment industry. We do not want this situation to repeat itself. Those who play tricks with industry and economy, I call to bring them under strict laws.
Besides, Khandkar Rafiqul Islam requested the government not to disconnect gas and electricity connections in any factory for three months as the production of many establishments was damaged due to worker dissatisfaction. At this time, the BGMEA president also urged the government to bring down the bank interest rate to one digit.
