7 dead and more than 700 injured in a strong earthquake in Taiwan

International Desk: Seven people have been reported dead in the powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.4 in Taiwan so far. More than seven hundred people were injured. BBC news.

A strong earthquake struck the country at around 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday (April 3). The strongest earthquake in the last 25 years shook the whole of Taiwan.

According to the US Geological Survey (ESGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 18 kilometers south of Hualen, Taiwan, and the source was 34.8 kilometers below the surface.

After the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued in the coastal areas of the country. A tsunami warning has also been issued for southern Japan and parts of the Philippines due to the strong earthquake.

In the video spread on social media, it was seen that many houses collapsed in this powerful earthquake. People are being evacuated from schools and residential buildings.

Taiwan’s fire department said seven bodies have been recovered so far. More than seven hundred people were injured in the earthquake. Rescue work is going on.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported power outages and internet outages across Taiwan.

Wu Chien Fu, director of the Geological Survey Center in Taiwan, said that this was the strongest earthquake since the 1999 earthquake that killed 2,400 people. He also said that the earthquake was felt all over Taiwan and other islands in the sea.

Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operations Center said in a statement that 101 aftershocks had been recorded since the earthquake as of 3 p.m. local time.
