International Desk: There are only three days left for the 12th National Assembly elections. Next Sunday, the much-discussed and criticized parliamentary election. The United Nations is monitoring the electoral process in Bangladesh very closely.

Stephen Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said this on Wednesday.

A journalist asked the spokesperson whether 28 of the 44 political parties are participating in the upcoming elections for the 300 seats in the National Parliament of Bangladesh. At least 1,970 candidates from these parties are contesting. About 400 foreign observers have reached Bangladesh so far. Despite such participatory elections, the main opposition party, BNP, has given a program to boycott the elections. Does the United Nations have any observations on this matter? In response to his question, Stephen Dujarric said, No, no.

We are just monitoring the process closely. We hope the election will be transparent and fair. That’s all we have on the matter so far.

It should be noted that in the briefing given earlier, Stephen Dujarric said that the United Nations wants to see a free and fair election in Bangladesh.

He also said that the response of the United Nations will be given after the election.
