International Desk: 16 people were killed in an attack in the village of Mushu in Plateau State, in the north-central part of Nigeria. The attack happened on Sunday (December 24).
Clashes between herdsmen and farmers are frequent in the region, AFP reported, citing the Nigerian army.
Reuters did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Nigerian military on the attack.
The north-central region of Nigeria is known as the ‘Middle Zone’. A number of ethnically and religiously diverse ethnic groups live there. Hundreds of people have been killed in sectarian clashes there in recent years.
Last May, more than 100 people lost their lives in clashes between farmers and herdsmen there.
Although these violent acts are often portrayed as ethno-religious conflicts between Muslim herdsmen and predominantly Christian farmers, climate change and agricultural expansion are among the causes of these conflicts.
