Mizbaul Haque, Chakaria (Cox’s Bazar):<\/strong> Due to the good natural environment, the farmers have taken up salt cultivation in the 65 thousand acres of land in Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong’s Banshkhali area, the only salt production area in the country. In the meantime, the production of salt from the field has started in the first phase of the season in the last two Novembers and the officials of the BSIC Cox’s Bazar office said that salt production will be ensured at every stage from the beginning of December. Since the beginning of the season, as the weather is favorable for salt production, salt cultivation is going on uninterruptedly. At the beginning of the season, salt cultivation has started a month ago in the upazila region of Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar, Rajakhali of Pekua upazila, Chanua of Banskhali upazila and Kutubdia upazila.<\/p>\n

Farmers hope that if the weather conditions are like this, there will be a bumper production of salt in the country against the demand. Due to the importation of salt from abroad by the syndicates, the farmers had to suffer losses despite producing large quantities of salt for several consecutive seasons. This time, as everything is helpful for salt production, the farmers are smiling.<\/p>\n

However, as always, some syndicates have become desperate to import salt from abroad by giving false information to the Ministry of Industry and Bangladesh Tariff Commission that the production will be less than the demand. It has been alleged that they have continued to make all kinds of efforts to import sodium salt from abroad showing the shortage of salt in the country. Farmers demand that the government should not be influenced by syndicate pressure. The way salt is being produced in the country, there will be no shortage.<\/p>\n

According to Cox’s Bazar Basic sources, every year at the beginning of November, farmers go to the field to produce salt. However, this year the farmers have entered the field a month earlier from October. This time 37 thousand farmers are engaged in salt cultivation. Another 75,000 laborers are involved in production in the field. A total of 500,000 people are employed in the domestic salt industry every year, including the transport load-unload and mill stage, packaging and marketing sectors.<\/p>\n

Preparations have been made for salt cultivation on a total of 65,000 acres of land this year. Meanwhile, BSIC has set a target of 23 lakh 85 thousand metric salt production from Chakaria, Pekua, Maheshkhali, Kutubdia, Pekua, Cox’s Bazar Sadar and Teknaf upazilas of Cox’s Bazar district and Banshkhali Upazila (partial area) of Chittagong.<\/p>\n

Due to acquisition of land in Maheshkhali for setting up coal power plant, 15-20 thousand acres of land is not producing salt this season. Along with this, 25 thousand marginal farmers have also become unemployed. Apart from Cox’s Bazar district, salt is produced in some areas of Banshkhali upazila. Apart from this, salt is not produced anywhere else in the country.<\/p>\n

When asked, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Cox’s Bazar Salt Industry Development Office Zafar Iqbal Bhuiyan told The Crime<\/strong> that cultivation has been started with the target of producing 23 lakh 85 thousand metric tons of salt this season. Last year the amount of land was 63 thousand 291 acres, but this year there is a possibility of increasing the extent of cultivation. Because this time the weather environment is quite good.<\/p>\n

He said that every year the cultivation starts in November, but this time the farmers started salt cultivation a month earlier. In the meantime, the first season of salt has grown from the fields of Kutubdia upazila. Hopefully, by mid-December, salt production will begin in full swing in the entire region, and there will be no shortage of salt.<\/p>\n

Advocate Shahidullah Chowdhury, president of Bangladesh Salt Farmers Association and former president of Chakaria Upazila Lawyers Association, told The Crime<\/strong> that the salt import cycle is bringing sodium chloride (salt used in mills) to the country in the name of sodium sulfate (salt used in mills). They are importing these salts from China and marketing them directly. We have complained to the authorities but nothing is being done.<\/p>\n

He said that some salt mill owners who are dependent on imports always get permission to import salt. They want the domestic salt industry to stop forever. On the contrary, they looted the country’s money as a benefit.<\/p>\n

Alleging that this year too, there is an ongoing struggle to import salt from abroad, Md. Shahidul Islam, General Secretary of Bangladesh Salt Farmers Association, told The Crime<\/strong> that the farmers started salt cultivation a month earlier because of the better natural environment this year compared to other times. Salt production has already started. In the meantime, the government is giving permission to some syndicates to import salt from abroad. We demand the government to save the domestic salt industry. Keep the livelihood of five lakh people involved in this industry alive.<\/p>\n

According to him, if the country’s salt production stops, the government will have to spend a huge amount of money every year to import it from abroad. At least 8 to 10 thousand crore rupees should be paid.
