{"id":8592,"date":"2023-08-28T14:57:22","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T14:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecrimebd.net\/english\/?p=8592"},"modified":"2023-08-28T14:57:22","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T14:57:22","slug":"82-percent-of-people-live-below-the-poverty-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecrimebd.net\/english\/news\/8592\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;82 percent of people live below the poverty line.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Dhaka Bureau:<\/strong> Economist Professor Dr.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Abul Barkat said urban poverty should be determined by considering the socio-economic and political positions of slum dwellers.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Slum Dwellers and Low Income The Khana Survey shows that at least 82 percent of slum and low-income dwellers are living below the poverty line.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">From here, it is possible to calculate urban poverty.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">50 percent of the urban population is made up of slums and low-income households.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">82 percent of whom are poor.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">As such, the coordinated efforts of public and private development organizations are necessary to reduce urban poverty.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">On Monday (August 28) at 10:30 AM, Prof. Dr. Dr. Abul<\/span><\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> Barkat said this: <\/span><\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Dr.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Abul Barkat said the survey found that only 6 percent of poor households in the city have some agricultural land.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Household food consumption is the first hit due to reduced income.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">According to the survey, only 12 percent of households feel that their family has food security.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The remaining 88 percent of families are deprived of the necessary medical care and education to meet the additional food costs.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">An average of 65 percent of households in cities have access to improved sanitation, but only 16 percent of the urban poor do.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> in the discussion.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> Dr.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Shafiq Uz Zaman said that qualitative and quantitative changes are needed in the overall development strategy to alleviate urban poverty.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Migration to cities is increasing due to the employment crisis in rural areas.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">But as there is no process of converting surplus agricultural workers into industrial workers in Bangladesh, there has been settlement rather than urbanization.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">He suggests thinking about alternative strategies for industrialization.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">ALRD Executive Director Shamsul Huda said, Slum dwellers are not a burden for our country, but those who have illegally earned money and smuggled it are a burden.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">If they are given equal opportunities without doing injustice and discrimination to the slum dwellers, they will also be able to prove themselves as an asset to the country.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Urban poverty is not a permanent problem;
