{"id":7643,"date":"2023-06-13T04:45:56","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T04:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecrimebd.net\/english\/?p=7643"},"modified":"2023-06-13T04:45:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T04:45:56","slug":"it-has-been-six-years-since-the-landslide-in-rangamati","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecrimebd.net\/english\/news\/7643\/","title":{"rendered":"It has been six years since the landslide in Rangamati"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Rangamati Correspondent:<\/strong> Today marks six years since the tragic incident of the Rangamati landslide.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">On the night of June 13, 2017, a memorable landslide occurred in Rangamati due to three consecutive days of heavy rain and lightning.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">120 people, including men, women, and children, lost their lives in this terrible landslide.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Meanwhile, five army personnel, including two officers of the camp, were killed by the landslide while removing the landslide on the Rangamati-Chittagong main road under an army camp in Manikchari of the city.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Road communication between Rangamati and the rest of the country was severed for nine days due to the complete collapse of 100 meters of road in the Manikchari Shalbagan section of the Rangamati-Chittagong highway. When the day returns after a year, the terrible memory of fear appears in the minds of the people of Rangamati. And even after six years of this incident, as the monsoon season has started, everyone is worried about the advance warning of heavy rain.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The deceased army members are Major Mohammad Mahfuzul Haque, Captain Md. Tanvir Salam Shanto, Corporal Mohammad Azizul Haque, Sainik Md. Shahin Alam, and Md. Azizur Rahman.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">According to the district administration, 66 people in Rangamati Sadar, 6 people in Jurachhari upazila, 2 people in Bilaichhari, 18 people in Kaptai, and 21 people in Kaukhali upazila were recovered, for a total of 113 bodies. Among them, the bodies of 33 children, 32 women, and 48 men were found. The landslide on June 13, 2017 in Rangamati caused massive loss of life and extensive physical infrastructure damage. Just as mountains with houses collapsed, many mountains without houses also collapsed. Again, mountains full of jungle trees also collapsed. In a word, the ground collapses in all kinds of mountains. Its extent and depth of oblivion were much greater.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">No one could have imagined that there would be so much loss of life, houses, road communication, and electricity in Rangamati due to heavy rains for three consecutive days. On that day, the tourist town of Rangamati was isolated from all sides.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Heavy rain started on the night of June 13 with thunder and lightning. The people of Rangamati had to spend that night in fear. After dawn, there were reports of landslides in five upazilas, including Bhedvedi, Montala, Rangapani, Shimultali, Muslim Para, and Loknath Mandir areas of Rangamati city, Mogban, and Sapchari Union of Sadar upazila. The highest casualties occurred on June 13 at Rangamati.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">A 100-meter-long road collapsed and completely disappeared in the Shalbon area of the Chittagong-Rangamati road due to a mountain collapse. Road communication between Rangamati and other parts of the country has been cut off for nine days. Erosion occurred in 145 places on various interstate roads. Apart from the Rangamati-Chittagong road, the Rangamati-Khagrachari road, Rangamati-Barichari road, and Rangamati-Kaptai road communication systems were severed due to the landslide disaster.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Apart from this, the Rangamati electric grid line suffered extensive damage to poles and lines. As a result, power supply in Rangamati city was stopped for three days. With the efforts of the army and power department personnel, it was possible to restore electricity within three days and road connectivity to Rangamati-Chittagong within ten days. Meanwhile, since the road communication is cut off, the administration has arranged for the movement of people, including the transportation of water, fuel oil, and goods, by launching the Kaptai-Rangamati waterway.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">More than 2,000 people took shelter in 12 shelters in Rangamati after becoming homeless. The Army supplies water and food to the shelters. Six years have passed since the terrible landslide in Rangamati, but the situation has not changed yet. The affected people are still living on the hill. Like every year, at the beginning of the rainy season, the Ebero district administration is carrying out a massive campaign in the cities and upazilas for the people of vulnerable areas at the foot of the mountains to move safely during the rains and go to shelters. In several parts of the city at the foot of the hill, numerous houses are again in dangerous condition. They want permanent rehabilitation from the government.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Rangamati District Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said that preparations have been made in advance to avoid loss of life in Rangamati district this year, also remembering the day. He said that warning signboards have been hung in dangerous areas. Already, 33 places in Rangamati city have been identified as risk areas. More than 29 shelters have been prepared. However, they expressed reluctance to move residents from vulnerable areas to shelters in case of heavy rains. Then I have to forcefully lock the house.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">However, the higher authorities have been informed about the permanent resettlement of vulnerable people living under the hill.
