Dhaka Bureau:<\/strong> After the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), Titas, the country’s largest gas distribution company, decided to increase the price of gas, In this case, the bill for one stove will increase by Tk 389 to Tk 1 thousand 379, and the bill for two stoves will increase by Tk 512 to Tk 1 thousand 592. On May 2, Titus sent this proposal to the Energy Regulatory Commission to increase the price.<\/p>\n

Earlier in June, the energy sector regulator, BERC, increased the price of gas for residential customers. At that time, the price of gas per cubic meter was fixed at 18 rupees. However, for customers without meters, the monthly gas consumption is reduced to 60 cubic meters for two stoves and 55 cubic meters for one stove. It was announced that the monthly bill for two stoves is 1,800 taka and the bill for one stove is 990 taka. After 10 months of the commission’s announcement, Titus objected.<\/p>\n

According to Titus’ proposal, BERC has fixed the cubic meters without any survey or data analysis against more than 2.5 lakh customers. This has increased technical losses, and Titus is facing financial losses.<\/p>\n

However, BERC says Titus’ complaint is not true. Last year, during the hearing on gas prices, 320,000 gas bills from Titus and 50,000 prepaid meter customers of Chittagong’s Karnaphuli Gas Company were analyzed. It can be seen that customers with two stoves use an average of 45 cubic meters of gas per month. But for unmetered customers, it was slightly increased to 60 cubic meters. At that time, it was said that the number of cubic meters would be further reduced in the future.<\/p>\n

Titus, on the other hand, claims that in January this year, the government increased gas prices by up to 179% for four categories of users in order to withdraw subsidies and reduce the revenue deficit. At that time, gas prices were not increased for residential, CNG, fertilizer, or tea garden users. Titus’ letter highlights information about customers using postage meters. It shows the bills from last October to March. It shows that residential customers with two-burner meters use an average of 97 cubic meters of gas per month. In March, the number of such customers was 53,744. At present, Titus has 2.857 thousand residential customers in the Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions. Among them are 25 lakh, 25 thousand unmetered, and 3 lakh, 32 thousand prepaid meter customers.<\/p>\n

Cab’s energy advisor, Professor M. Shamsul Alam, said, according to the commission, it can be seen that unmetered two-stove customers use 50 cubic meters of gas per month and one-stove customers use 45 cubic meters of gas per month. In reality, many customers do not use that amount of gas. Titus’ claim to change this limit is absurd. They want to raise gas prices to legitimize their corruption and gas theft.<\/p>\n
