World Free Press Day is today. Following the basic principles of freedom of journalism and establishment of free media, evaluation of media freedom worldwide, taking oath to resist interference with freedom, and remembering journalists who lost and gave their lives in the course of their professional duties, the day will be celebrated with various programs in Bangladesh along with the whole world. This time the theme of the day has been decided as &#8216;The Shape of Future Rights: Freedom of Expression is the Driving Force of All Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to the recommendation of the 26th General Session of UNESCO in 1991, the date (May 3) was recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 as &#8216;World Press Freedom Day&#8217; or World Free Press Day. Today marks the 30th anniversary of World Free Press Day. On this occasion, UNESCO has organized a special program at its headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The United Nations considers freedom of expression to be one of the elements of the protection of all human rights. The international organization believes that the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) should give the highest priority to the freedom of the media. Because freedom of expression is a prerequisite for the establishment of all human rights,<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">In a message to mark the day, titled &#8217;30 years of the Windhoek Declaration&#8217;, a UN Secretary-General said, &#8220;The challenges we face globally during the COVID-19 pandemic mark a credible, verifiable, and universal role in saving lives and building strong, stable societies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">During pandemics and other critical times, including climate emergencies, journalists and media professionals help us address our rapidly changing and often overwhelming information landscape while countering harmful inaccuracies and falsehoods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">He said journalism is a public resource. The economic impact of the pandemic has hit many media outlets hard, threatening their very existence. Besides, with the budget crisis, it is becoming difficult to get reliable information. Rumors, falsehoods, and final or divided opinions are increasing to fill this gap. I call on all governments to do everything within their power to support a free, independent, and diverse media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The UN Secretary General said that free and independent journalism is our greatest strength in combating misinformation and disinformation. The UN Action Plan on the Safety of Journalists aims to create a safer environment for media workers around the world. Because information is a public resource.
