This information has emerged from a study at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). This study was conducted on 11 thousand 232 people who came for treatment in the neonatal department of the institution from 2014 to 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">On Sunday, April 2, the martyr of the university, This information was given at a seminar and discussion meeting organized on the occasion of World Birth Defects Day 2023 at Milton Hall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to the study, 789 children were born with various physical defects in the Neonatal Department of BSMMU in the last 8 years. This number is 7.02 percent of the total number of children who came for treatment in the last 8 years. That&#8217;s higher than the rate of birth defects in babies in the developed world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to the seminar, the worldwide rate of birth defects is 3 to 6 per 100 people (3 to 6 percent). Southeast Asia has the highest rate of birth defects in the world. Every year, nearly 3 lakh babies die within 28 days of birth due to birth defects alone. This rate of child mortality has a major negative impact on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">In the discussion meeting, the rate of birth defects, causes of defects, and preventive plans were discussed. Professor Dr. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice-Chancellor attended the event as the chief guest. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed The Vice-Chancellor laid emphasis on the prevention and treatment of birth defects in newborns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">He said that the present administration of the university is establishing new labs one after another to ensure better medical services and training. A genetics lab will also be established. But what can be done about transgender (third gender) birth defects also needs to be taken into consideration. For the convenience of patients and further expansion of medical services, the university will introduce a full-fledged double-shift OT (surgery) program. The necessary anesthesiologist will be confirmed, so that the lack of anesthesia does not disrupt the service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Chairman of the Department of Neonatal Medicine, Dr. Mohammad Sahidulla, gave his expert opinion on birth control in the discussion meeting moderated by Sanjay Kumar Dey. Phyto-Maternal medicine Department Chairman Professor Dr. Dr. Nahrin Akhter, professor of pediatric surgery, Dr. Tosaddek Hossain Siddiqui, line director Saiduzzaman, National Consultant Dr. Nurul Islam, and others were present.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Besides, senior officials, teachers, and doctors from various levels of the World Health Organization, the Directorate of Health, and the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University were present.
