When Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed last Friday to restore diplomatic ties after seven years, the rest of the world did the same. World leaders, starting with the UN Secretary General, welcomed this agreement with statements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The exceptions, however, were the responses of two countries, the United States and Israel. Both countries view Iran as an arch-enemy in the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, and Iran also considers these two countries to be the number one threat to its security and sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">A White House spokesman welcomed the decision to establish diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia with &#8220;cautious language&#8221; but has already questioned whether it will last. &#8220;It remains to be seen whether Iran will keep its commitments,&#8221; said White House spokesman John Kirby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Whatever the US&#8217;s overt official response, most analysts believe the China-brokered deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia has caused serious discomfort in Washington.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Israel, however, has yet to make any official public response. But it is clear from the reports and comments in the Israeli media that the accord between Tehran and Riyadh did not please them at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The United States and Israel are seen as the biggest beneficiaries of the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. The Iran-Saudi conflict has been extremely helpful in explaining how the US has been able to maintain its geopolitical interests throughout the Middle East for decades. On the other hand, Israel also took advantage of this conflict and followed the principle that &#8220;the enemy of our enemy is our friend&#8221; and developed good relations with some of the Gulf countries that are hostile to Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Chinese leader Xi Jinping with Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi Chinese diplomacy in the Middle East has made the US uneasy.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>Naturally, if diplomatic relations are re-established between Iran and Saudi Arabia with the prospect of closer ties in the future, it could create a new landscape of geopolitical relations in the Gulf region. Both the United States and Israel feel that this new situation is not in their interests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Why is Washington uncomfortable?<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">When news of the deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia first came out of Beijing, it caused both surprise and alarm in Washington. The main reason for this, however, is not the Iran-Saudi Arabia agreement; the main reason for their discomfort and fear is the role played by China in this agreement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The United States has played the role of referee in all kinds of conflicts in the Middle East for decades. Now, the way China is stepping in as a mediator in the name of peacemaking in that sphere of influence is a serious headache for US policymakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The relationship between the United States and China has been showing severe tension for the past few days. In that context, some are describing China&#8217;s role as another challenge to US hegemony around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to Jeffrey Feltman, a former senior US diplomat and fellow at the Brookings Institution, Beijing&#8217;s role will be seen as &#8220;a slap in the face to the Biden administration&#8221; and China as a rising power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">For many years, one of the declared pillars of China&#8217;s foreign policy was &#8220;not to pry into other countries&#8217; internal affairs.&#8221; But the new trend in China&#8217;s foreign policy in recent years has seen exceptions to this policy in many cases. Not only that, they are also seen to be actively playing the role of mediators in various international conflicts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Daniel Russell, a top diplomat in the former US administration of Barack Obama, told Reuters that China&#8217;s role in the deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia has significant implications for Washington.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">He said that in a conflict in which China is not a party, it is an exceptional case to take initiative and try to reach a diplomatic settlement in this way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">He said, &#8220;Now the question is, will we see this in the future?&#8221; When Chinese President Xi visits Moscow, is this a prediction of China&#8217;s attempt to mediate between Russia and Ukraine?<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Many in Washington are already skeptical about China&#8217;s true intentions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Republican member Michael McCall, the chairman of the US House of Representatives&#8217; foreign policy committee, is reluctant to accept China as a &#8220;peace broker.&#8221; In his words, &#8220;China is not a responsible power and cannot be trusted as an impartial and fair mediator.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Some analysts see China&#8217;s growing role in such mediation as a sign of the country&#8217;s growing influence on the world stage and the declining power of the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">John Alterman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington said, &#8220;The message Beijing is trying to send here is that China wants to emerge as a rising and powerful diplomatic power in the Gulf region, in contrast to the strong military power of the United States.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International Desk: When there is a possibility of a peaceful solution to the long-standing dispute between two hostile neighbors embroiled in a regional conflict, it is customary in international diplomacy to welcome it.
