International Desk:<\/strong> Recently, the BBC released a documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As a result, many controversies were created. Income tax officials even raided two offices of the British media company BBC in India. After this, the question about the freedom of the press and the publication of news in the country arose.<\/p>\n

Around 11 a.m. local time on February 14, around 20 officials from India’s Income Tax Department and police arrived at the BBC’s offices in the capital, Delhi, and ordered staff to move away from their computers and hand over their mobile phones.<\/p>\n

Income Tax officials also appeared at another BBC office in Mumbai, India’s commercial capital, shortly after.<\/p>\n

However, the income tax department did not name it Abhiyan but “survey.” Their explanation was that, despite repeated requests, the BBC authorities were not properly presenting their income, expenses, and tax information to them in India.<\/p>\n

And the tax authorities said they are cooperating fully with them. Their journalists will continue to report in an ‘impartial and fearless manner’.<\/p>\n

Three weeks before the raid on the BBC offices, a documentary about Hindu-Muslim riots in India’s Gujarat in 2002 was screened in the UK. The BBC documentary questioned Modi’s role in the Gujarat riots. Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time.<\/p>\n

The Indian government has banned the screening of the documentary film “India: The Modi Question” as “propaganda” aimed at spreading controversial stories and has banned its showing and sharing on social media.<\/p>\n

The documentary has only been screened in the UK so far. India’s domestic political arena also became heated with the screening of that documentary.<\/p>\n

After that, the attack on the tax officials at the BBC office naturally raised questions about media freedom in India under the Modi government.<\/p>\n

Reuters spoke to eight Indian journalists, industry executives, and media analysts.<\/p>\n

They said that recently some media outlets have been subjected to harassment in the name of raids by various government agencies for publishing news critical of the government. They are not given official advertisements, and some journalists have been arrested.<\/p>\n

Abhinandan Sekhri, CEO of independent online media group Newslaundry, said, “There was never a golden age of press freedom in India.” But in the current state, it was never there either.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
