Three districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts and Jaintapur area of Sylhet are most at risk of earthquake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">All areas are at least 100 km away from Dhaka. But if there is an earthquake of magnitude 7 to 8, it can create a major disaster in Dhaka. These data have emerged in the research of some professors at Columbia University and Dhaka University in the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Seismologists of the country say that a magnitude 7 to 8 earthquake 100 to 200 km away from the capital could cause strong tremors, which could damage fragile buildings in the city. The soil in the expanded or new residential areas of Dhaka is soft and weak. If a multi-storied building is built without following the building construction rules on such soil, there is a danger of collapsing even with a moderate level of vibration. The risk of one to three storey buildings constructed in Lalmati area is relatively low.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">90 percent of human deaths in earthquakes are caused by building collapse. Bangladesh Open University Vice-Chancellor and Seismologist Professor Syed Humayun Akhtar told the media that there are 13 underground faults in Bangladesh. However, all of his loins are quite far from Dhaka. But if there is a moderate to severe earthquake in Chittagong Hill Tracts and Sylhet, many buildings in Dhaka may collapse. Of these, 6 lakh buildings are six stories or higher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">After the collapse of Rana Plaza, BUET proposed to determine and list the earthquake-resistant buildings in Dhaka. Buildings at the highest risk were to be marked in red, buildings at medium risk in yellow and earthquake resistant in green. But BUET sources say that the recommendation made to the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) was not accepted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">After the 2013 Rana Plaza accident in Savar, ready-made garment factories have been retrofitting or mitigating the risk. The work is done under the pressure of foreign buyers. But necessary measures have not been taken in the case of residential and other buildings to make life safe for common people. As a result, even in mild to moderate earthquakes, the walls of some buildings in Dhaka have cracked and collapsed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">A joint study by BUET and the Dhaka University History Department shows that an earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale struck Assam, India, in 1897. The epicenter of the earthquake was 250 km away from Dhaka. At that time, there were only 100 concrete buildings in Dhaka, and the population was 90 thousand. 10 buildings, including Ahsan Manzil, were damaged in that earthquake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Mehdi Hasan Ansari, professor of civil engineering at BUET and seismologist, told the media that if the law is not followed and the construction of buildings on soft ground is not stopped in Dhaka, a big disaster is waiting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">ASM Maksud Kamal, professor and vice chancellor of Dhaka University&#8217;s disaster science and management department, said that 35 percent of Dhaka&#8217;s 305 square kilometer area is mainly built on red soil. This soil is suitable for the construction of multi-story buildings. The remaining 65 percent of the area is mainly clay and sandy areas along the river banks. Mohammadpur, Uttara, and Purbachal are of this type of soil. Most of the private housing projects are mainly built on soft soil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The study also said that soft-soil buildings in Dhaka are at risk of collapsing or collapsing in the case of an earthquake of magnitudes 5 to 6.
