He also killed himself by nailing the door to his house.emotional distance with a lover. To forget the pain, Sumi Akhtar, a teenager from the city&#8217;s port area, tied a rope around her neck. In Chittagong, 16- to 25-year-old youths are more likely to extinguish the light of their lives in the face of anger for trivial reasons; the rate is 47 and a half percent. However, men are more likely to commit suicide than women. Out of 259 incidents in the port city in 2022, 142 men and 117 women voluntarily gave their lives. One suicide incident after another\u2014the police are also worried.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>Urban suicide rates are higher in port-EPZ areas. 43 men and 34 women have walked this path in a year. The picture is quite different in Khulshi, the city&#8217;s capital.There has been only one suicide in a year in this elite area. There are 11 reasons for their decision to take this step.These include family discord, marital discord, financial distress, livelihood crises, uncertainty, debt repayment, love disputes, pride with parents, depression, dowry, and emotional distress. This information was obtained by talking to the police and reviewing various police station records related to last year&#8217;s suicide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">A recent study conducted by an NGO in Chittagong says that 41.2 percent of suicides are due to family problems, 11.8 percent are due to failure in exams, 11.8 percent are due to marital problems, 11.8 percent are due to cheating in love, and 11.8 percent are due to out-of-wedlock pregnancy and sexual relations. 5.9 percent of men and women committed suicide as a result of husband abuse, and 5.9 percent as a result of financial problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">sociologist and former vice chancellor of Chittagong University. Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury said those who committed suicide must have done it out of displeasure. You are choosing this way to get rid of life. Alarmingly, this trend is more common among young people. This is happening for various reasons, including not getting a job at the end of education, disappointment in life, extreme poverty, and fear about the future. Family, society, and the state must work together to prevent suicide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Chittagong Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Md. Mostafizur Rahman said that in this age of information technology, teenagers are choosing this path by getting angry with their parents for no reason. The terrible trend of suicide has also made us think. Family counseling is needed first to control it. Parents should strengthen family bonds by providing a happy environment for children. The police are also starting work in this regard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, OC of Bandar Police Station, said that these incidents are happening in the city&#8217;s Bandar area over trivial family matters. Here, mainly, suicides are happening due to family turmoil, i.e., husband and wife quarrels, financial tension, and the inability to pay debts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Disturbance in the minds of port people: The Port-EPZ area is home to several lakhs of low- and lower-middle-class residents.Several times more suicides occur in the port area than in other areas of the city. This trend is increasing day by day. On the other hand, the Khulshi area is home to the elite class of the city; there is no tendency to commit suicide here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">In 2022, 30 men and 18 women committed suicide in the Bandar-EPZ area alone. 13 men and 16 women in the EPZ near the port and 11 men and 1 woman in Patenga voluntarily lost their lives due to turmoil and sadness. There were also 12 males and 7 females in Kotwali, 9 males and 13 females in Baklia, 11 males and 12 females in Bayezid, 11 males and 9 females in Panchlaish, 9 males and 12 females in Chandgaon, and 7 males and 6 females in Halishahar.8 men and 5 women committed suicide. However, apart from Khulshi, 3 men and 1 woman committed suicide in Sadarghat; 6 men and 4 women in Chawkbazar; 5 men and 5 women in Pahartali; 2 men and 3 women in Akbar Shah; and 4 men and 5 women in Karnaphuli Thana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Young people are more depressed: In Chittagong City, youth aged 16 to 25 are more depressed. Young women are not behind. In just one year, 65 young men and 58 young women between the ages of 16 and 25 chose the path of suicide. Besides, eight teenagers and 14 girls aged 10 to 15 years, 26 men and 28 women aged 26 to 35 years, and 43 men and 17 women above the age of 36 years took their own lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Correspondent: Argument with mother over mobile phone use.
