According to the World Health Organization, more than 150,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the country. More than 10,000 of them are children.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>\u00a0<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>Only half of the children come under treatment. 50 to 80 percent of their cancers are cured with treatment, depending on the type. However, child cancer patients suffer more than adult cancer patients due to an inadequate treatment system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">In such a context, International Children&#8217;s Cancer Day 2023 is being celebrated today in the country, like the rest of the world. This year&#8217;s theme is &#8220;Better Survival is Achievable, Throw Their Hands Up.&#8221;Cancer patients&#8217; support has been highlighted as a result of this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, various programs have been undertaken on the occasion of the day. A children&#8217;s drawing competition and discussion meeting organized by the National Cancer Research Institute and Hospital will be today at 9 a.m. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Department of Pediatric Hematology will hold an awareness procession and scientific seminar at 9 a.m. Besides, various voluntary organizations and private institutions at the district upazila level will celebrate the day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Doctors told Yugantar that, apart from genetic changes in the country, children&#8217;s cancer is increasing due to adulterated food, the use of toxic chemicals in food, an increase in air pollution and radiation levels, and unplanned industrialization and development. Blood cancer rates are high in children. Children are also affected by brain, kidney, colon, liver, and bone cancer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced global action to reduce child mortality from cancer. By 2030, it is said, the rate of childhood cancer should be reduced by 60 percent. However, neighboring countries India and Pakistan have accurate statistics on pediatric cancer patients, whereas Bangladesh does not.Although childhood cancer detection rates are increasing, treatment is not expanding. Specialist doctors are less common. There are only 50 pediatric cancer specialists in the country, both public and private. Experienced nurses and technicians and pediatric cancer treatment services outside Dhaka are insufficient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Dr. National Cancer Research Institute and Departments of Pediatrics and OncologyShah Md. Rashed Jahangir told Yugantar that 10 to 12 thousand children are affected by cancer every year in the country. About 4 to 6 thousand of them are receiving treatment. The rest remain unidentified. The National Cancer Research Institute has only 40 hospital beds for children. In the last year, more than 1300 children have received treatment, both old and new. Depending on the type of cancer, 50 to 80 percent of children are cured with treatment. However, many people do not understand when children have cancer at the beginning. Many do not want to believe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Project Director of the Bangladesh Cancer Society, Professor Dr. Gholam Mohiuddin Farooq, said that there are all kinds of problems, including infrastructure, in cancer treatment. Along with the government, private entrepreneurs should come forward to create treatment opportunities. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University&#8217;s former head of the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Md. Anwarul Karim, told Yugantar that children&#8217;s cancer is relatively less common compared to adults. The number of medical oncologists is also smaller. However, several medical colleges have created pediatric cancer specialist posts. Some places have also been promoted. 400 to 500 children are diagnosed with cancer annually at BSMMU. Most children recover with treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">He also said that despite the modern treatment of children&#8217;s cancer, it is still urban-oriented. The patient&#8217;s stress will be reduced if treatment is carried out. Apart from that, the main obstacle to cancer treatment is the financial situation of the patients. This causes many patients to stop treatment midway.
