Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. Secretary of the Election Commission yesterday Monday. Jahangir Alam told reporters this information. He said, we have asked the parliament secretariat for the meeting time for the presidential election. The meeting will be held today at 2 pm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier, Election Commissioner. Anichur Rahman told reporters that the voting for the presidential election will be held between January 23 and February 23. Accordingly, the election time counting has started from yesterday Monday. The meeting with the Speaker will determine everything about the presidential election. In this case, the voter list will be done after the 6 by-elections held on February 1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Constitution, the President can hold office for a period of 5 years from the date of assumption of office. The current president. Abdul Hamid assumed office on April 24, 2018. Accordingly, his 5-year tenure will end on April 23. Meanwhile, if the post becomes vacant due to the expiry of the term of the President, there is a provision to conduct the election within 60 days to 90 days before the expiry of the term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2018, the last election schedule was announced on January 25 that year. The deadline for filing nominations was February 5, selection of nominations on February 7, withdrawal of candidature on February 10 and polling on February 18. At that time, the Election Commission decided to complete the entire process within 22 days. However, as the incumbent president was a single candidate, he was elected unopposed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former President Md. Zillur Rahman was under treatment in Singapore from March 14, 2013. Abdul Hamid served as Acting President. President Zillur Rahman died on March 20 that year. Abdul Hamid served as the interim president from that day. Later on 22 April he was elected President unopposed and took oath as the 20th President of Bangladesh on 24 April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then Md. Abdul Hamid was elected president unopposed for the second consecutive term on 7 February 2018 and was sworn in as the 21st president on 24 April that year. According to the constitution, he cannot be a candidate for the post as he has held the office of president for two terms. So the curiosity of the countrymen is about who will be the new president this time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is said in the Constitution: Meanwhile, Article 123 of the Constitution states that if the position becomes vacant due to the expiration of the term of the President, an election will be held to fill the vacancy within 60 days of the 90 days preceding the expiration date. Besides, Article 48 states that there shall be a President of Bangladesh, who shall be elected by the Members of Parliament according to law. No person shall be eligible to be elected President if he is under 35 years of age, or is ineligible to be elected a Member of Parliament, or has ever been removed from the office of President by impeachment under this Constitution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, Article 50 states that, subject to the provisions of the Constitution, the President shall hold office for a period of 5 years from the date of assumption of office. Provided that, notwithstanding the expiry of the term of office of the President, he shall continue to hold office till his successor assumes office. No person shall hold the office of President for more than two terms, whether consecutively or not. The President can resign from office by written letter addressed to the Speaker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The President shall not be eligible to be elected as a Member of Parliament during his term of office and if any Member of Parliament is elected as President his seat in Parliament shall become vacant on the day of his assumption of office as President.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Election Procedure: According to the Presidential Election Act, the Chief Election Commissioner will conduct the election as the &#8216;Electoral Officer&#8217;. For this, a meeting of parliamentarians will be held in a national parliament chamber, where the electoral officer will preside. If an election is required during the session of the Parliament, the Commission will discuss with the Speaker at least 7 days before the polling and decide the polling schedule. And if the Parliament is not in session, on the day of polling, the meeting of the Parliament will be convened by an official notification after discussing with the Speaker at least 7 days before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to be a candidate for the post of president, the nomination paper of the concerned person must be signed by one member of parliament as proposer and one member of parliament as supporter. Besides, the nominee must also have a statement in agreement with the nomination paper. Members of Parliament will be voters in this election. The commission will publish a voter list. If there is more than one valid candidate and there is more than one candidate at the end of the day of withdrawal of nomination papers, voting on the ballot paper will be held after 12 noon on the day fixed for the sitting of the Parliament. As polling will be public, counting of votes will also be held publicly. Whoever gets the highest number of votes will be elected as the next president.
