Meanwhile, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has demanded to stop the process of increasing electricity prices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BERC chairman in the public hearing. Abdul Jalil and four other members of the commission were present. In the public hearing, the parties interested in increasing the price of electricity present their arguments to the Commission in favor of their respective proposals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The electricity price was last increased in February 2020 at all levels. At that time, the wholesale price was increased by 8.4 percent and the general consumer or retail level was increased by 5.3 percent. At present the retail price of electricity is 7 taka 2 paise per unit. The technical committee of BERC has recommended to increase the price of electricity by 1 21 paise to 8 23 paise per unit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is known that the increase in the wholesale price of electricity was announced in November last year. After two days, the distribution companies applied to BERC with a proposal to increase the prices at the retail level i.e. at the consumer level. Those applications are evaluated by the Technical Committee. A public hearing on the proposal was then held on Sunday. In this, the technical committee proposed to increase the price.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On November 21 last year, BERC decided to increase wholesale electricity prices by 19.92 percent to reduce the subsidy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Energy expert Professor Dr. M. Shamsul Alam said, at this moment there is no need to increase the price at any stage of wholesale and retail. People are already in financial crisis from all sides. Earlier, the decision to increase wholesale electricity prices was not correct. With the prices coming into effect from December, distribution companies, showing losses, asked for price hikes at the retail level. In this, the government has increased the price of electricity at the retail level. The increase in prices will have a major impact on the standard of living at all levels of society. Additional price will be charged from common man&#8217;s pocket.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Energy sources say the government is borrowing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to meet the foreign exchange reserve crisis. Besides, the government is also taking financial assistance from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). These organizations have suggested reducing government subsidies. Donor organizations are against subsidies, especially in the fuel, oil and electricity sectors. Electricity prices have been increased due to the demand of donor agencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It should be noted that the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) applied to the Energy Regulatory Commission to increase the average wholesale electricity price by 66 percent on January 12 this year. But due to the incompleteness of the PDB information, it was not taken into account and asked to apply again. Later, when PDB made a fresh application, BERC organized a hearing on May 18. Following this application, BERC&#8217;s Technical Appraisal Committee recommended a 58 percent price hike. However, in the public hearing, cab and business representatives opposed the price hike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has demanded to stop the process of increasing electricity prices. CPB President Mohammad Shah Alam and General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince made this demand in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the statement, the cost of electricity production is increasing day by day due to the government&#8217;s wrong policies, corruption, mismanagement, wastage etc. But the process of increasing the price of electricity has started again on the pretext of increasing production by hiding these facts, it is not acceptable at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The statement also said that experts have proved that it is possible to save Rs 30,000 crore in the power sector by preventing corruption, irregularities and mismanagement. But the government is putting the burden on the shoulders of the people without doing that. The life of the common man has become miserable during the time of high inflation. If the price of electricity increases, it will affect everywhere, including the cost of production.
