After the Padma Bridge, Bangladesh reached another milestone of progress and development. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the country&#8217;s first metro rail. He will be the first passenger of Metrorail. After the announcement of the inauguration, the metro rail will start running on the 11.73 km stretch of the first section from Uttara to Agargaon. Bangladesh Bank has printed a commemorative note of Tk 50 on the occasion of the inauguration of Metrorail. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will officially release this commemorative note at the inauguration ceremony today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the meantime, full preparations have been made after testing and commissioning of trains on the Uttara-Agargaon section. Unprecedented security measures have been taken around the Bangabandhu International Conference Center on the occasion of the inauguration of the Metrorail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), the construction company of the project, MAN Chiddik said that all preparations have been made for the inauguration of the metro rail. All preparations were made for the inauguration keeping in mind the Independence Day on December 16. As the date has been pushed back, there is no problem in the preparation. Passenger transport will start from the day after the inauguration. It will take time to gradually familiarize and sensitize the passengers with the automated system. In the next 2 to 3 months, 100 percent passengers will be transported by metro rail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also said that at this time of next year, preparations are being made for the inauguration of the section of metro rail from Agargaon to Motijheel. The progress of work on this part is quite good. Now our work is progressing as per schedule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to DMTCL sources, Metrorail is a priority mega project of the government. The project is progressing under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister. Around the inauguration Bangabandhu International Conference Center was arranged in Sherbangla Nagar. 2 thousand local and foreign guests have been invited to the opening ceremony. After announcing the inauguration, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be the first passenger to buy a ticket and board the metro rail. Strict security measures have been taken as high level ministers and officials of the government, including the Prime Minister, boarded the metro rail. Due to this, common passengers will not be able to board the metro rail on the first day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On December 18, 2012, the government approved the Metrorail project. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of the project on June 26, 2016. The cost of the project is estimated at 21 thousand 985 crore 59 lakh taka. Of this, the Japanese Development Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing financial assistance of Tk 16 thousand 594 crore and Bangladesh government is giving Tk 5 thousand 395 crore. After almost 6 and a half years of inaugurating the construction work, today the Prime Minister is officially inaugurating the Metrorail. Even if the metro rail is inaugurated today, it will not carry passengers at full speed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Almost all processes for using Metrorail including ticketing, opening and closing of doors, entering and exiting stations will be automated. So awareness of common people is most needed for using Metrorail. Passengers need some time to get used to everything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few days ago, about 200 people were allowed to buy tickets and get rapid pass at the station as an experiment to use Metrorail. Then it was seen that only two to three people were able to complete the entire process including buying tickets to use the Metrorail. Others are not used to using Metrorail. Due to this, initiatives have been taken to raise the awareness of passengers, officials said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">9 stations from Uttara to Agargaon have already been prepared. 12 coaches of Metrorail are ready for movement. But initially 10 trains will run. Now two trains will be kept at the depot as backup. More railway coaches are waiting to arrive from Japan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Officials said that after the inauguration, the metro rail will run for 4 hours every day from 8 am to 12 pm. The train will run non-stop from Uttara to Agargaon, without halting at any station. A train is scheduled to depart every 10 minutes. Now both single day tickets and rapid passes will be available from December 29 (tomorrow). Rapid pass can be taken from the station by registering online.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) professor and communication expert. M Shamsul Haque said that Metrorail will play a major role in reducing traffic congestion. However, it will not be possible to reduce traffic congestion in the entire city. A complete network of metrorails can be assessed when it is in place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said, residents living near Metrorail will surely get convenience and reliability in commuting. You can go from one place to another in less time. Metrorail will be able to move passengers from one place to another by adding coaches and speed according to demand during peak hours. After alighting from the Metrorail, commuters will not have to rely on a few BRTC buses. Proper planning of bus routes to and from metro rail should be implemented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, according to the MRT authorities, a special police team will be formed for the security of the metro rail. However, this team has not yet received final approval. A special unit of police will be formed with 357 members called MRT Police Unit. An officer of the rank of DIG will be in charge of this unit. Even if the final approval is not received now, the Metrorail authorities will take security measures with policemen as per their demand from the police headquarters. But the government is expected to approve this special unit soon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Note that the first part of the 11.73 km long metro rail from Diabari to Agargaon in Uttara. In August 2017, the construction of the MRT-6 metro rail project began. The construction of this part is now 100% completed. The second section of metro rail from Agargaon to Kamalapur is under progress with the aim of opening in 2024 with the cooperation of Japan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Commemorative notes of Tk 50: Commemorative notes of Tk 50 have been printed on the occasion of the inauguration of Bangladesh&#8217;s first flying metro rail. The commemorative note, signed by Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rauf Talukder, has the Prime Minister&#8217;s portrait on the left side and a photo of the Metrorail in the background. &#8216;Portrait of Bangabandhu&#8217;, &#8217;50&#8217; and &#8216;Bangladesh Bank Monogram&#8217; are printed as watermarks on the right side of the note. The headline reads &#8216;Metrorail will save time, save environment, reduce traffic congestion&#8217;. Another picture of Metrorail has been added on the other side of the note. &#8216;Moving People, Saving Time and Environment&#8217; is printed in English.
