Cox’s Bazar Representative:<\/strong> The arrival of tourists in Cox’s Bazar is not as expected even in the peak season of tourism. During this period, the tourist spots in and around Baliadi are supposed to be crowded, but the actual situation is different. With the presence of a few tourists, hotels and motels are not doing business as expected. As a result, tourism traders are worried about the return of investment. Those concerned believe that the number of tourists in Cox’s Bazar has decreased due to various reasons, including reduced travel to St. Martin.<\/p>\n

Abul Kasem Sikder, President of Cox’s Bazar Hotel-Guest House Owners Association, said that on paper, the tourist season is from the end of September. At the end of November and the beginning of December, when the annual exams are over, the families who want to travel come to Cox’s Bazar, go on a trip to St. Martin. Many of the corporate offices hold their annual conferences at Cox’s Bazar. Even though it is the middle of the season now, it can be said that the tourist drought is going on. In the past, Cox’s Bazar used to be a hot spot for tourists on the occasion of Victory Day. Everyone has seen the picture of many tourists spending the night on the side of the road, sand dunes, in cars without getting a room in the hotel, but even though Friday is Victory Day and Saturday is a weekend, only a handful of tourists have come to Cox’s Bazar. Booking was only 15-20 percent rooms. So we are very disappointed. Many of those who invested in the tourism business with loans are now worried about how to repay the loan.<\/p>\n

Organizing Secretary of Hotel-Motel Officers Association and General Manager of White Orchid Hotel, Riyad Iftekhar, said that the crowd of people on the sandbank of the beach increases on Fridays. This time on December 16, Victory Day and the weekend fall on the same day. It is also crowded like before. Although the crowd in Baliadi is increasing, not everyone is a tourist. The number of beach visitors here is high, who come from Cox’s Bazar city or nearby areas and return home after evening.<\/p>\n

Tours Operator Owners Association of Cox’s Bazar (TUAC) president. Rezaul Karim said, 70 percent of tourists visiting Cox’s Bazar go to enjoy the scenic beauty of St. Martin. As such, the tourism business in Cox’s Bazar has been running mainly around Prabaldwip for the past few decades. But in this season, for some unknown reasons, the Teknaf-Saint-Martin sea route is closed. Knowing that, the number of tourists in Cox’s Bazar has decreased. There is no doubt that the rest of the season will be similarly sluggish if Teknaf-Saint-Martin does not start sailing.<\/p>\n

Abul Kalam, general secretary of Sugandha Jhinuk Market Cooperative Society, said, many media are taking our tourism to the brink of destruction. When they see the presence of people on the sandy beach, they report ?Cox’s Bazar is full of tourists. But many people do not have the ability to distinguish between tourists and visitors. This is ruining the tourism business in Cox’s Bazar. Those of us who have invested in small and medium businesses with loans on the occasion of tourism are about to lose everything.<\/p>\n

Sea-Cruise Operators Owners Association of Bangladesh (SQUAB) President Tofail Ahmad said that 10 tourist ships ply the Teknaf-Saint Martin route every year. But this time no ship is plying from Teknaf except the Karnaphuli ship from Cox’s Bazar. Traveling to Saint Martin by ferry is expensive. Middle class and lower class tourists cannot travel in it. Besides, the capacity of Karnaphuli ships is also less. Therefore, the arrival of middle and lower class tourists in Cox’s Bazar has decreased compared to the past. If there is a problem from the existing jetty at Teknaf, shipping can be started through Sabrang jetty. From here the ships reach St. Martin’s Wharf very easily, the fare will not increase and the time will also be less.<\/p>\n

St. Marty’s island housing businessman said. Didarul Alam said that 90 percent of Saint Martin’s 10,000 people are involved in the tourism industry. The remaining 10 percent of people depend on fishing in the sea for their livelihood and 90 percent of the people involved in the tourism industry earn only four months. The rest of the year they run on four months of income. But as expected number of tourists do not go to the island even in the peak season, our investment does not seem to pay off. We have to live an inhumane life with our family as the income is stopped. Therefore, I request the government and administration to allow the movement of ships on the Teknaf-Saint Martin route as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

Abdul Quader Mishu, director of Hotel Ocean Paradise Ltd., a member of Cox’s Bazar Hotel-Motel Owners Association, said that half a thousand hotel-motel, guest house and cottage owners are suffering from the frustration of not getting tourists even in the peak season. We have an ongoing loan of hundreds of crores of rupees.<\/p>\n

The new Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cox’s Bazar, Muhammad Shaheen Imran, said that tourism is a potential industry. The government is doing everything to promote it. Vessel movement on Teknaf-Saint Martin route stopped due to maritime crisis. We have written to higher authorities with alternative proposals. Ministry of Naval Affairs is concerned here.
