This research paper led by scientist Professor Tofazzal Islam has been published in the high impact science journal Frontiers in Plant Science.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The scientists completed the jackfruit genome sequence using the recently established Illumina sequencing platform at IBGE. The genome size of jackfruit is 1.04 Gbp. Through bioinformatics analysis, scientists have found distinctiveness of fruit traits and 12-month fruit-producing genes and DNA sequences in the jackfruit genome, which will be helpful in genetic engineering or molecular breeding of jackfruit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The chief scientist of the research team. Tofazzal Islam said, we have completed the complete genome sequence of Bari Kanthal-3, a breed of Baro Masi jackfruit for the first time in the world. It is recognized as a breed through registration of a jackfruit that grows naturally in the hills of Ramgarh in Chittagong. It bears fruit from September to June, yielding four times more than seasonal jackfruit. The taste and nutritional value of the fruit is also very good. In this study, we have identified genes associated with large variation in jackfruit and barosome fruiting. The results of our research will help in the development of new varieties of perennial jackfruit through biotechnology. Commercial cultivation of jackfruit requires cultivars with perennial and fruit characteristics, which are prerequisites for the development of jackfruit-based processing industries. The complete genome sequence data of jackfruit that we have submitted to GeneBank will be particularly useful for future biotechnology research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, Global Institute for Food Security and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University are working as Bangabandhu Research Chair among the scientists who discovered the secret of jackfruit life. Andrew Sharp is also there. In this context, he said, there has not been much research on the national fruit jackfruit of Bangladesh at the molecular level. It is a very important fruit for nutrition and food security. Genome sequence and identification of potential genes of a Baromasi variety of jackfruit naturally grown in the country has opened a new door in jackfruit research. It will be useful in research to develop jackfruit varieties with improved taste and high nutritional value. There is a possibility of expansion of new industries based on jackfruit in the country. Since the complete genome sequence of Bangladeshi jackfruit has been published in World Genebank, it can now be used by all interested scientists in the world for research.
