The Crime Desk:<\/strong> For the past few days, people have been suffering from intense load shedding in the country. Due to lack of supply of fuel due to the dollar crisis, production has decreased in power plants. At the same time, the government’s arrears to private power plants in this sector dependent on energy imports are also increasing. As a result, electricity is not being produced as per demand.<\/p>\n

Currently, the production capacity in the country is more than 27 thousand MW, but the demand is less than 16 thousand MW. The Sheikh Hasina government has built power plants one after another in the country in the last fifteen years. It is alleged that these power plants have been constructed unplanned without ensuring fuel supply. In many cases, the demand is also not taken into consideration.<\/p>\n

Energy experts say that as a result of the economic disaster left behind by Sheikh Hasina’s government, this entire sector has fallen into grave danger.<\/p>\n

As a result, the interim government has to allocate funds to this sector on a priority basis. Even if it is not possible to pay the full amount, you have to pay as much money as you can maintain the supply.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, electricity and energy advisor Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan said that measures have been taken to solve the temporary crisis. Dollar payments are being made.<\/p>\n

Those related to this sector say that the main problem of the electricity crisis in Bangladesh is the dollar crisis. Based on this, other problems have become evident at the moment. At the same time, the people have to pay for the implementation of unplanned projects of the previous government.<\/p>\n

\nMost of the electricity in the country comes from gas-based power plants. The power generation capacity from gas is about twelve thousand megawatts. Earlier, up to 6,500 megawatts of electricity were produced. But now more than five thousand megawatts of electricity cannot be produced.<\/p>\n

The power sector has received gas supply ranging from 120 to 130 crore cubic feet per day. Now 80 to 85 crore cubic feet are being supplied, said PDB.<\/p>\n

Two floating LNG terminals at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar handle 100 million cubic feet of gas per day. Summit’s LNG terminal has been closed since May 27. As a result, the supply is now 60 crore cubic feet.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, all the units of the Barapukuria power plant have been shut down due to mechanical failure. As a result, loadshedding was around 3,000 megawatts on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Most of the electricity is supplied from Adani’s power plant in Jharkhand, India. Electricity supply was up to 1500 megawatts per day. But due to non-payment of dues, they are now supplying 1000 megawatts of electricity.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina’s government tried to reduce the outstanding power bills of the private sector by issuing bonds from banks. But they still owe a lot.<\/p>\n

Gas bill, public-private power plant bill, Indian power plant bill, all together, amount of outstanding money of PDB has exceeded 33 thousand crore rupees.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, India’s Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has written to the Interim Government’s Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus for the outstanding amount.<\/p>\n

Shamsul Alam, energy advisor of CAB, said that one of the main problems now is the financial crisis. Therefore, gas supply should be increased here by reducing other sectors. Oil-fired plants have to run more. Power production should be increased by raising dollars. Gas rationing should be done to increase production by 15 percent. Only then can the problem of load shedding be solved.<\/p>\n

Dependence on imports for energy
\nEnergy experts say that the worst policy mistake in this sector is that the entire power system was dependent on imports considering the strong economy.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina’s government has set up one power plant after another based on a flawed concept of economics. In addition to gas, the use of oil and coal has increased to generate electricity in these centers.<\/p>\n

Most of this fuel has to be imported from abroad. Earlier, the government had never taken any decision on primary fuel itself. Nor has it focused on renewable energy sources as alternative fuels.<\/p>\n

Analysts say, due to this import dependence of energy, the cost of power generation has increased. Which directly created pressure on the dollar. Analysts point to the years 2022\u201323 as an example of the crisis of import dependence. Fuel imports cost an additional $13 billion that year.<\/p>\n

Energy expert Professor Shamsul Alam said that private sector power plants are paying the rest. They are purchasing fuel at their own expense. But the fuel and power generation money is falling to them.<\/p>\n
