For the past 15 years, they have been occupying these forest lands by building fisheries, malt gardens, ponds, dairy farms, and restaurants. The forest department officials were helpless against these illegal encroachments due to their grip on power. Now, after the fall of the Awami League government, the forest department has started an eviction drive to clear illegal encroachments. In two phases, 105 acres of forest land were freed from illegal encroachment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rangunia, Sukhvilas, Dasmile, and Khurshia are surrounded by large hilly areas with forests. Ershad Mahmud noticed the forest on the side of the road. Ershad Mahmud expanded his empire in Rangunia upazila and surrounding areas for the last 15 years. These encroached forests are close to roads. The communication system is also good. Last Monday, in the first phase, about 55 acres of forest land in the Sukhbilas area was freed from illegal encroachment. There were four or five cowsheds, three ponds, parks, and restaurants. Fish were cultivated in the ponds. Another 50 acres of forest land was freed from illegal occupation in the second phase on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked, Divisional Conservator of Forests (South) Abdullah Al Mamun said, Ershad Mahmud has been suffering from illegal occupation of around 220 acres of forest land for a long time. In these places of the forest department, he has built various income-generating facilities, including ponds, parks, malta gardens, orchards, and dairy farms. On the first day, 55 acres of illegal land were cleared. Another 50 acres were cleared on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Forest department officials said that Chittagong has two forest divisions, North and South. There are about 3 lakh acres of forest land under these two forest divisions. The influential people are suffering from the illegal occupation of a large amount of forest land in the forest department. There are also allegations that some dishonest officials of the forest department are involved with them. A list of these illegal occupants has been prepared and given to the district administration. Despite that, these forest lands of the forest department have not been freed from illegal occupation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">About 9 thousand acres of forest land in Chittagong North Forest Division is under illegal occupation. Officials said illegal encroachment is high in the Mirsrai Kerhat area. Around 8 acres of land is also under illegal occupation in the Pramtak Pahar area of the city. There has been a case regarding these places. Chittagong Forest Division (North) Assistant Conservator of Forests (Headquarters) Zainal Abedin said that the list of illegal encroachers has been prepared and given to the District Commissioner.
