Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate it this Saturday (November 26) morning. All preparations for the event have been completed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Director of Karnaphuli Tunnel Construction Project. Harunur Rashid said that the work of the south tube of the tunnel has been completed. A program has been organized on this occasion. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will join the program as the chief guest and inaugurate the tube virtually. On this occasion, a program has been organized at the Patenga end of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel today at 9:30 am. Eminent persons including ministers, parliamentarians and political leaders will be present in it. He said, the entire work of the tunnel has not been completed yet. It may take the entire month of December to complete the entire work. It will then be opened for traffic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, according to Chittagong district administration sources, it may take time till January 2023 to complete all the work and prepare the tunnel. If all goes well, traffic will be able to move through the tunnel next February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Related sources of the Tunnel Project Director&#8217;s Office said that this tunnel is being built for the first time in the country with the financial and technical support of China. This mega project is being constructed at a cost of 10 thousand 374 crores. Now the work of fire fighting, lighting and control management is going on inside the tunnel. The project vehicle is being tested. As the tunnel is built under the river, 52 irrigation pumps are being installed in the tunnel due to the fear that water may accumulate at any time. Bangladesh Bridge Authority is implementing this project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An alternative route in case of an accident on one of the two tubes laid under the river is also currently under construction. Installation of lamps and pumps, construction of drainage system is also going on simultaneously. About 5.35 km approach road, 772 meter long flyover has been constructed. Now the construction of toll plaza is going on in Anwara section at the southern end of Karnaphuli.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sources related to the project also said that if the tunnel is launched, Chittagong will achieve an important step towards the implementation of the One City Two Town plan, modeled after the Chinese city of Shanghai. Around the tunnel, there will be a major change in the road communication between the capital Dhaka, Chittagong metropolis and tourist city Cox&#8217;s Bazar. Meanwhile, numerous small and large industries are being built on both sides of the connecting road at Anwara upazila. Tourism and industrialization around the tunnel are adding new dimensions to the economy. When the tunnel opens, it will take only five to six minutes to cross the Karnaphuli river.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The total cost of tunnel construction was estimated at 10 thousand 374 crores. Out of this, Bangladesh government is giving Tk 4 thousand 461 crore. The remaining 5 thousand 913 crore rupees are given by the Chinese government. Exim Bank of China has given this loan for a period of 20 years at an interest rate of 2 percent. China Communication and Construction Company Limited (CCCC) is implementing the project as the contractor for the construction of the tunnel. However, the sources indicated that the cost of the project may increase due to various reasons, including the increase in the dollar price.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Incidentally, the length of the main tunnel is 3.32 km. However, the total length of the tunnel including the connecting road is 9.39 km. Two tubes of 10.80 meters diameter have been made through tunnels under the river. The length of each of them is 2.45 km. Although the tunnel has two tubes, there are three connecting passages. One of these will be linked to the first two as an alternative path.
