The Crime Desk:<\/strong> Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has warned that there is a conspiracy to create a ‘Christian state like East Timor’ with parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar. According to the Daily Star, Hasina said in a meeting, ‘Like East Timor, they are planning to create a Christian country with Bangladesh (Chittagong) and parts of Myanmar with a base on the Bay of Bengal.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina claimed that a ‘white man’ met her before the January 7 elections. The person told Sheikh Hasina that she would not face ‘any problem’ if a particular country was allowed to build an airbase on Bangladeshi territory.<\/p>\n

“It may seem that it (the plot) targets only one country, but it is not,” the Bangladesh prime minister said without naming the country. I know what they want.’<\/p>\n

Talking about Sheikh Hasina’s comments, her former advisor, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, told Sputnik India, “The Prime Minister does not speak without proper evidence. I am sure he thought well before making this statement.’<\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina was elected for the fourth time in a row this January. The election was boycotted by the country’s main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). They demanded elections under a caretaker set-up, though the demand was not in line with the country’s constitution.<\/p>\n

Significantly, it was thought that the US might be batting for the BNP in this election. However, the governments of both countries have tried to overcome the tension created around the elections.<\/p>\n

‘Partition of Bangladesh and Myanmar’<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Although Sheikh Hasina has mentioned that there is an attempt to form a Christian state with parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar without mentioning the name of any country, her Awami League leaders know exactly who the Prime Minister is referring to.<\/p>\n

Awami League Finance and Planning Sub-Committee Member Squadron Leader (retired) Sadrul Ahmed Khan told Sputnik India that it is clear the US is trying to enter the South Asian region by supporting the opposition. The opposition includes the National Unity Government (NUG) and the People’s Defense Forces (PDF).<\/p>\n

Sadrul Ahmed Khan said, ‘Since Myanmar’s Kuki-Chinese insurgents are predominantly Christian, they are relatively more likely to be influenced by foreign actors.<\/p>\n

Kuki-Chinese rebels in the Chinese state of Myanmar are engaged in fierce fighting with government forces.<\/p>\n

This Awami League leader pointed out that the Biden administration has no longer hidden the fact that it supports Myanmar’s opposition forces since last year, after the US President signed the Burma Act, which calls for the provision of “non-lethal aid” to Myanmar’s ethnic armed groups.<\/p>\n

The first tranche of aid under the law reached opposition forces this year. The matter has been vociferously objected to by the ruling State Administration Council (SAC). According to the Voice of America (VOA), the SAC said, “The United States has used Myanmar as a tool to counter China’s influence in the region.”<\/p>\n

Sadrul Ahmed Khan pointed out that America’s unfettered support for the Kuki-China insurgents has put the security of Bangladesh and Myanmar, as well as India, at risk. North-eastern states like Manipur, India, have a large population of ethnic groups.<\/p>\n

In fact, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh claimed in February that the spread of the Chin-Kuki-Jo tribe had implications for the country’s national security. The northeastern Indian state has been experiencing ethnic clashes between the majority Meitis and the Kuki-Jo group since last May. It has resulted in over 200 deaths and the displacement of the displacement of thousands of internally displaced people.<\/p>\n

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament in January that New Delhi would fence the entire 1,643-km Indo-Myanmar border.<\/p>\n

Chowdhury highlighted that India’s Northeast region has benefited from the overall improvement in India-Bangladesh relations, including on security issues, under Sheikh Hasina.<\/p>\n

The US plans to establish a base in St. Martin.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Moreover, Sadrul Ahmed Khan said, the US has long wanted to establish a base on the strategically important St. Martin Island on the Bangladesh-Myanmar maritime border in the Bay of Bengal.<\/p>\n

He said, ‘Bangladesh is ready to provide all kinds of support in peacekeeping operations, humanitarian aid, or logistics exercises. However, the US has long wanted to establish a naval base on the island of St. Martin. Bangladesh condemns such military ambitions as they will destroy our sovereignty and affect the peace and stability of South Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that Bangladesh does not support any arms race between the US and China, nor will it act as a ‘proxy’ for US interests to deter China. Because an independent state like Bangladesh has its own vision for the Indo-Pacific, He said, in the tone of Hasina, that the country will not compromise in the face of external pressure.<\/p>\n

Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said that another US base in South Asia will not only affect the security of Dhaka but also New Delhi.
