A new contractor, the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), was given the job in August last year, but they are eyeing the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA). The project to employ 53 thousand people is pending some procedural decisions, including ensuring infrastructure facilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Economic Zone Project Admin Supervisor Mohammad Feroz said, Basically, we are still connected with the Bangabandhu Tunnel project. There is no update on what will happen. As far as I know, it may take another 4 months to complete the idle process. Only then can we talk about the progress of this project. At present, there is no work except to guard the project area with some security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the project was officially inaugurated in 2016 near Dighi Junction in Kalabibi, Anwar, great potential was touted. The Bangabandhu Tunnel, which was inaugurated on the same day, became operational long ago. However, after the opening of the tunnel, the economic value of the proposed economic zone area increased. At a distance of 200 yards from the tunnel road, a 40-foot-wide road of brick sand runs up to the project gate. In the first three years of the contract, 200 acres of hills in the project area were leveled. A one-kilometer, four-lane road has been constructed from Bairag to the Economic Zone. Besides, there is a boundary wall of about one kilometer in the Bairag part of the project. After that, no work was done in 8 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the ground, it was seen that the signboards were hanging on the main gate of the project and the temporary structure building inside. There are no other activities. Cows are grazing on the road ahead. 5\/6 security personnel and some cleaners are guarding the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On August 16, last year, the construction of the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) was officially awarded to CRBC, the Chinese government&#8217;s designated contractor. A meeting of the Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Finance Minister, gave in-principle approval to a proposal by the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) to contract with CRBC through direct procurement mechanisms (DPM). The Chinese company is to establish an economic zone on 784-acre land based on Jituji (two countries&#8217; government levels). The zone is entirely reserved for Chinese entrepreneurs and investors. Chemical, automobile assembly, garment, and pharmaceutical factories are proposed in this economic and industrial zone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After that, Chairman Bezar visited the project area in Anwara, expressed optimism about the progress of the project, and directed the concerned to submit the master plan of the project quickly. But even then, the project did not make much progress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The people concerned said that the work on this project has stopped mainly because of the contractor&#8217;s complications. What is the reason for this delay? Where exactly is the complication not being clarified from any side?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina&#8217;s visit to China in June 2014, the Chinese government expressed interest in setting up a special economic zone and industrial zone in Chittagong. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the two countries during that visit. Two years later, when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Dhaka, the foundation stone of the economic zone was laid. At this time, China Harbor Engineering Company Limited will work on the infrastructure development of the economic zone. But as the final agreement on China Harbor with Beza was not reached after six years, the responsibility was given to the CRBC, appointed by the Chinese government. Then a year passed.
