Chittagong City Corporation (CHSIC) is constructing this pedestrian crossing under the Arakan road. The underpass will have one entrance in front of the Bahaddarhat Police Box and another on the north side of Arakan Road. After about six long months of feasibility study, its design was formulated. The potential cost of the underpass has been estimated at Tk 12 crore. Chasik has already called for tenders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Engineers of Design Planning and Management Consultants Limited (DPM), the underpass designer, said that more than 1,000 people cross the road every hour on average at the Bahaddarhat intersection. Due to the connection of several roads, the traffic pressure is high at this junction. As a result, road crossers are always at risk of accidents. Women, children, and the elderly are most at risk. Pedestrians were also reported to have been injured in accidents at various times. In this situation, if the underpass is constructed, pedestrians will be able to cross the road smoothly, avoiding accidents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this regard, City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury told the media that Bahaddarhat is a very important junction. A lot of people gather there every day. So many cars come and go. So people cross the road, risking accidents. People cannot cross the road with ease or fear. Sometimes accidents happen. We take the initiative to build an underpass so that people can cross the road very easily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mayor said that there was a thought to build a footbridge at the Bahaddarhat intersection. But there, the height of the flyover has become too low. A footover bridge under it can cause problems for high vehicles. Again, I will arrange for some hawkers to sit in the underpass, but abroad. This will be the first underpass for pedestrian crossings in Chittagong. If the underpass is there, the beauty on the road will be fine. Moreover, there will be a kind of chaos in road management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As would be the underpass:<br \/>\nThe underpass will be 41.2 meters long and 10 meters wide, according to the design consultant firm DPM. Its height is 4 meters. The two entrances will have two staircases each. There will also be two escalators (escalators) each. 10 to 20 shops will be constructed on both sides to rehabilitate hawkers inside the underpass. Each shop will require 2.75 meters of underpass space. If these shops are excluded, there will be 4 and a half meters, or about 15 feet, of space for people to walk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, the entrance of the underpass will be canopy-shaped to prevent water ingress during flooding. If water enters for any reason, there will be two pumps to drain it. Apart from this, there will be adequate lighting and a number of adjustable fans inside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to sources in the engineering department of Chasik, tenders were called for the underpass on April 28. The last day for submission of tenders is May 27.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">DPM&#8217;s Quality and Quantity Engineer, Mozaffar Ali Mamun, told the media that only people will cross this underpass. No cars will cross. In the study, we have seen that, on average, more than 1,000 people cross the road at Bahaddarhat every hour. It is more common during peak hours. A large number of people who cross the road are prone to accidents. If there is an underpass, it will no longer be there. All modern facilities will be under the underpass. Elderly and sick people face problems while crossing the road. With Skeletor, that won&#8217;t be a problem either.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked whether water would enter the underpass in case of flooding, he said no. Designed to keep water out. In this case, there will be canopies at the two entrances. Canopies prevent water from entering. It will be much higher than the flat label. It will be two feet higher than the sidewalk next to the main road. Still, there will be two pumps to drain the water if, for some reason, it enters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chasik&#8217;s executive engineer. Ashiqul Islam told the media that the Bahaddarhat underpass will be the first escalator underpass in Bangladesh. There will be facilities for the smooth movement of people here. Escalators are provided for the convenience of the disabled, children, and the elderly. This underpass will be financed by the city corporation itself. City residents will benefit if the underpass is constructed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What urban planners say:<br \/>\nCity planner engineer Delwar Hossain Majumdar told the media that the Bahaddarhat intersection is very dangerous. It would be great if there was an Andapass. It would be very suitable if the design of the underpass was very proper or designed to make it comfortable for the users. I think the underpass will be very effective if it can be kept safe and clean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding the provision of shops in the underpass, he said that if there are two shops, the insecurity of pedestrians will also be removed. Gulistan underpass in Dhaka also has shops.
