On this day in 1948, the Constitution of the World Health Organization came into force for the first time. World Health Day is celebrated on this day every year. This year, we are celebrating the day with the theme &#8220;My Health, My Rights.&#8221; This year&#8217;s theme has been chosen to emphasize the importance of everyone&#8217;s right to quality health care, education, and information everywhere. This motto reminds us of our right to safe drinking water, clean air, and good nutrition. This theme reminds us that quality housing, decent work, environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination are the rights of all. Everyone should have this right. In fact, working to achieve the highest standards of physical and mental well-being for all is one of the World Health Organization&#8217;s mandates. It is our responsibility to ensure that all persons are not discriminated against by their caste or religion, political beliefs, economic status, or social status.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have my own vision for the WHO Southeast Asia region. It is an area where people &#8220;need to take a holistic approach to health and wellness and strengthen themselves physically and mentally to achieve their full potential.&#8221; I want to see a region where &#8220;everyone has the right to health from birth. All communities, from the most vulnerable, must be covered.&#8221; You may ask, How do I achieve the right to health?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Achieved by ensuring universal access to high-quality health services. And it can be achieved by addressing various health-related issues such as education, safe food and water, adequate housing, a good environment, and many more. In short, the establishment of the right to health means that health care and health-related matters must simultaneously be made available to all. Everyone will have the opportunity to receive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On World Health Day, we say it with pride. Our Southeast Asia region has achieved a lot on the right to health. There is much to celebrate. Over the years, our member states have been improving on various health indicators. The Universal Health Coverage Service Index has increased from 47 countries in 2010 to 62 countries in 2021. Average physician services increased by 30.5 percent over 2015. Currently, more than 28 people are serving every 10,000 people on average. This growth in numbers is due to transformative initiatives in the education of health professionals across the region. From 2000 to 2020, the maternal mortality rate in our region has decreased by 68 and a half percent. The under-five mortality rate is now 29, up from 84. The neonatal mortality rate is now 17 per thousand, compared to 41 earlier. Regional immunization coverage for diphtheria, tetanus toxoid, and pertussis (DTP3), measles-containing vaccine second dose (MCV2), and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV3) increased significantly from 2021 to 2022. Most member states are expected to meet more than 90 percent coverage of DTP3 and MCV2 vaccines to achieve the 2030 global target.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between 2015 and 2021, new HIV infections in the region fell by 25 percent. And the rate of malaria infection has decreased by 62 percent. Between 2015 and 2022, the average International Health Regulations (IHR) Core Capacity Index value increased from 64 to 68. Yet challenges remain. About 40 percent of our region&#8217;s population still remains out of reach of essential health services. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought stagnation to some Member States, setting back progress. Adequate investment in health remains a challenge. Health spending by current governments in the region is unacceptably low. Due to this, the proportion of families facing financial difficulties in accessing basic health care is increasing in various countries. Many families are struggling financially.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We continue to see challenges in combating infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. However, the odds of dying from the four major diseases among those aged 30 to 70 have fallen by 13 percent since 2000. These diseases are cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases. However, this mortality rate still remains unacceptably high at 21.6 percent. Worryingly, more deaths are due to poor quality of care than lack of care or service. People from vulnerable and disadvantaged communities often receive poor care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many still suffer from stigma related to various health issues. There is stigma for HIV\/AIDS, disability, or mental health conditions. Many people also experience discrimination in the health system because of gender, class, race, religion, sexual identity, or other characteristics. Gender disparities prevent equitable access to the diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable health issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, women with elevated blood glucose receive less treatment than men. This disparity is also seen in hypertension. Violence against women and girls continues. Which is a violation of their human rights and causes serious concern for public health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Against this backdrop, we call on all governments to increase investment in health and strengthen health systems. Urging to focus, especially on primary health care. Good laws and policies that address various health issues, including tobacco control, environmental protection, and improved nutrition, are essential. Health care should be made more non-discriminatory, accessible, acceptable, and of better quality for all individuals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To address these issues and others, I have outlined five priority areas that I intend to focus on during my term. These include mental health, women and children (including pregnant women), vulnerable populations, climate change, and technology and innovation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What we achieve in these areas will be felt by our people and in different countries. Will create opportunities for the next generation in the long run. The responsibility to respect, protect, and ensure the progressive implementation of the right to health rests with various governments and organizations, such as the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On World Health Day, on the 76th anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization, let us recommit to a future where health is not a privilege but a promise. This promise is for the dignity and well-being of all people everywhere.
