There is no water in the main canal of the Ganga-Kapotaksha (GK) irrigation scheme. As there is no water in the main canal, all animals, including sheep, are crossing. As there is no water in the main canal of the irrigation project, fishermen are catching fish with nets. Two of the three pumps have been inoperative for nearly two years. Irrigation was going on somehow with the rest of the pump. The 3rd pump has also become useless since February 19. As a result, the operation of Ganga-Kapotaksha (GK), the country&#8217;s largest irrigation project, has been stopped. Lakhs of boro farmers in four neighboring districts, including Kushtia, are in trouble. As the low-cost irrigation system has been stopped, farmers are now irrigating paddy fields with the help of sallow machines at a cost four times higher. The authorities are not able to give any guarantee as to when the water from the irrigation project will flow to the paddy field again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1954, the country&#8217;s largest Ganga-Kapotaksha (GK) irrigation scheme was established on the banks of the Padma River at Bheramara in Kushtia. Around four lakh hectares of land in the surrounding districts, including Kushtia, were under this project. Since the opening of the Farakka Dam in India upstream of the Padma River, the amount of arable land under this irrigation scheme has been decreasing since the flow of water into the Padma has decreased during the dry season. At present, about 100,000 hectares of land in Kushtia, Jhenaidah, Magura, and Chuadanga districts are under this project. Water is taken from the Padma River through the intake channel and discharged into the main canal of the project through three pumps. The water goes to the farmers through the sub-branch canals. In 2022, two pumps in the project became unusable. Due to various complications, including the non-availability of necessary funds, the two pumps were not started again. The work on this project was going on with the rest of the pump. At the end of January this year, irrigation water was supplied to the canal with the help of that pump. However, on February 19, the last pump also became inoperable. Closed irrigation water supply works. Lakhs of farmers and boro farmers in 4 districts are in dire straits. Farmers grow paddy in GK project water at nominal cost. But this time, the farmers are worried because the water supply for the project was stopped at the beginning of the Boro season. Boro saplings have already been planted in many lands, but several lands are yet to be planted. Farmers are forced to carry out irrigation with the help of sallow machines. It is costing them a lot of money. Many people still could not plant seedlings due to a lack of water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Farmer Sabur Ali said that he cultivates paddy under the GK project in these three seasons: Boro, Aman, and Aush. He has cultivated paddy till now with a nominal irrigation cost in Jik water. But this time, the situation is different. Now he has to irrigate the land with the help of a sallow machine due to the non-availability of project water. It costs a lot of money.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Farmer Habib said it will be difficult for them to cultivate boro paddy this time. It will be very expensive to irrigate paddy fields by buying diesel at high prices. Thousands of boro farmers have faced such problems. He demanded to start the irrigation program immediately by activating the pump for the GK project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alauddin, president of the GK Farmers&#8217; Association, said, &#8220;We have not received water yet this year. The people of Zik are not able to tell when they will get water. We are now planting paddy with water from the sallow machine. At least 40 liters of oil will be needed to cultivate one hectare of groundwater. Apart from this, machine rental will cost at least 6 thousand rupees more. This will increase the production cost of paddy in the current Boro season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mizanur Rahman, executive engineer of the Ganga-Kapotaksha (GK) project in Bheramara, said that two pumps are already damaged. The third pump started supplying water to the canal on January 31. The pump was shut down on February 19, 2024, due to a technical fault. It is not possible to say for sure when the irrigation activities will start.
