The five-year term of the 11th Parliament, which began on January 30, 2019, ended on Monday. The journey of the 12th National Parliament is starting today, Tuesday. The first session of this parliament, formed by the twelfth parliamentary election on January 7, is starting today at 3 p.m. According to the constitution, the five-year term of the government and the parliament starts counting from the day of the first meeting of the parliament.

The twelfth parliament is ‘different’ in almost every calculation, analysis, and equation. Out of the 44 political parties registered with the Election Commission, only five parties are represented in the new Parliament. Again, the direct political allies of the Awami League, which has formed the government four consecutive times with an absolute majority, are the remaining four parties that have representatives in parliament.

Apart from Naogaon-2 seats, the Awami League won 223 seats in the elections held in 299 seats. And among the 62 independent winners, 57 are incumbent leaders of the Awami League. As such, 280 out of 299 are mainly ‘Awami League Party’ MPs. 94.30 percent of the parliamentarians of the Awami League are in the twelfth parliament, including party, party-independent, and alliance.

According to Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), the 12th National Assembly elections were one-sided. In a press conference on January 17, the anti-corruption organization said, “This year’s election was not free and inclusive.” As a result of this election, Bangladesh will be considered an international ‘test case’ in terms of the experience of democratic degradation and electoral strategies and innovations.”

In the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker today, the President will address

According to the rules, the session will start today at 3 p.m. under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku. The government party Awami League parliamentary party meeting held on January 10 has been nominated as the speaker four consecutive times. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. And Shamsul Haque Tuku was nominated as Deputy Speaker. As the Awami League has an absolute majority, Shirin Sharmin as speaker and Tuku as deputy speaker are going to be re-elected.

The session will be adjourned for some time after the election of the speaker and deputy speaker. After the oath, the session will resume under the chairmanship of the Speaker. After that, as it is the first session of the English New Year 2024, according to the constitution, the President will address the first day of the session today at 4:30 pm. Later, the members of Parliament will participate in the discussion on the motion of thanks brought on by the President’s speech. Usually, the first session of the year is long. According to sources from the Parliament Secretariat, the first session of the twelfth Parliament may continue throughout the month of February.

In the first meeting of the first session, apart from the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the nomination of the presiding officer for the session and the raising of condolence motions and ordinances (if any) shall take place. On the occasion of the commencement of the first session of the new parliament, the area of the parliament building is clean and decorated with tubs of flowers. The Speaker invited diplomats besides dignitaries of the country to witness the first meeting of the newly constituted Parliament.

Only five teams are represented.

Although 27 registered political parties took part in this year’s elections, only five parties, including the Awami League, got representation in parliament. Jatiya Party (Japa) got 11 under the ‘Plough’ symbol. Bangladesh Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) Rezaul Karim Tansen became MPs this time as well. However, on the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers (December 17 last year), the word ‘coalition’ was mentioned in the letter that the Awami League sent to the Election Commission (EC) informing about the concession of 25 seats for Japa. It should be noted that since 2008, Zapa has been participating in the elections by agreeing seats with the Awami League. All in all, 294 members of the 12th Parliament are directly or indirectly partners or political allies of the ruling Awami League. Mohammad Hushamuddin Chowdhury, who is the son of Fultali Huzur and president of the unregistered political party Anjumane Al Islam, Hushamuddin is also known as an ally of the Awami League. As an independent candidate, Hushamuddin met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganobhaban on December 6. Sources of the local Awami League said that despite the fact that there was a boat candidate, there was an effort from various quarters of the government to win Hushamuddin. Kalyan Party was born in 2007 under the leadership of Ibrahim. At the end of November, Ibrahim announced his intention to leave the alliance with the BNP and participate in the polls. There is talk that he was brought to the polls with the assurance of winning. Local Awami League sources said that every effort was made to win him, from campaigning to voting.

Syed AK Ekramuzzaman has won the Brahmanbaria-1 seat.
