Four senior members of Iran&#8217;s security forces were also killed in the attack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to Iran&#8217;s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Israel was responsible for the attack. It killed four military advisers as well as many Syrian forces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Israel has not commented on the attack. It has been attacking Iran-backed targets in Syria for years. Such attacks have intensified since the start of the Israel-Gaza war, following a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The conflict has raised concerns about a wider war spreading around the region, particularly between bitter rivals Israel and Iran. There are many pro-Tehran groups in the Middle East, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen. The country also supports groups in Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, &#8220;Israel launched a missile attack targeting a four-story building. Five people were killed. The entire building was destroyed. Leaders supported by Iran held a meeting here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The British-based monitor, including a source inside Syria, also said the targeted area was a high-security zone known to leaders of Iran&#8217;s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and pro-Iranian Palestinian factions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said, &#8220;They definitely targeted senior members of the group.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Syria&#8217;s state media reported heavy smoke billowing from the mid-morning attack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The Syrian state news agency SANA said, &#8220;The attack targeted a residential building in the Majeh neighborhood of Damascus,&#8221; but did not say if there were any casualties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">An AFP correspondent from the scene said ambulances, firefighters, and Syrian Arab Red Crescent rescue teams surrounded the destroyed building. Civil Defense was busy searching for survivors under the rubble of the completely collapsed building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The Majeh area houses the United Nations headquarters, embassies, and restaurants. &#8220;I clearly heard explosions in the western Majeh area, and I saw a huge cloud of smoke,&#8221; a resident told AFP. The sound was like a missile exploding. A few minutes later, I heard the sound of an ambulance.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on its territory during more than a decade of civil war in Syria. The attacks initially targeted Iranian-backed forces and Syrian army positions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">In December, an Israeli airstrike killed a senior general in Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guard. Razi Mousavi has been the most senior commander of the Quds Force, the Guard&#8217;s foreign operations arm, since the killing of force commander Qassem Soleimani in a US drone strike in Baghdad on January 3, 2020. He was killed outside of Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">At least 23 pro-Iran fighters were killed in airstrikes in eastern Syria the same month. Four more people were killed in the north of the country. According to the Observatory, the attacks were likely carried out by Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Recent months have also seen regular cross-border shelling between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Israel rarely comments on individual attacks in Syria. But Israel has repeatedly said it will not allow arch-enemy Iran, which backs President Bashar al-Assad&#8217;s government, to increase its presence in Syria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">A bloody conflict has been going on in Syria since 2011. Due to this, more than 50 lakh lives have been endangered.
