In the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the resolution titled &#8220;Human Rights Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar&#8221; was adopted unanimously. It was adopted on Thursday (November 17). The resolution was co-sponsored by the OIC and the European Union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This UN resolution is a unique example of regional and international solidarity towards Rohingya Muslims. It is of great concern that the situation in Myanmar continues to deteriorate, delaying the repatriation of the Rohingya. In such a situation, the resolution aims to strengthen the collective efforts of the UN member states to find a sustainable solution to the Rohingya problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year&#8217;s resolution was co-sponsored by 109 countries, the highest ever. The resolution focused primarily on the human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minority communities in Myanmar, which has further deteriorated under the current political climate. It involves finding the root cause of the Rohingya problem, creating an environment conducive to spontaneous, safe and sustainable return to Rakhine State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, Myanmar has been called upon to provide full cooperation to all human rights organizations of the United Nations, including the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General appointed in Myanmar. The resolution highlighted the important role of regional countries and regional organizations such as ASEAN in improving the political and human rights situation in Myanmar. In particular, it emphasized on the speedy implementation of the five-point recommendations unanimously adopted by ASEAN.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The resolution called for continued vigilance on the ongoing prosecution and accountability process, while also welcoming the progress of the case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice and the investigation of the prosecution at the International Criminal Court. The resolution expressed solidarity with Bangladesh and recognized the humanitarian efforts undertaken by Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bangladesh&#8217;s continued cooperation with the ICC, IIMM and other accountability mechanisms to ensure justice and accountability for human rights violations against the Rohingya is commended. Under the principle of &#8216;Responsibility and Burden Sharing&#8217;, the United Nations member countries continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas in humanitarian shelter in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the speech given when the resolution was accepted, the charge of the affairs of Bangladesh. Manowar Hossain said, &#8220;Until the return, the Rohingya population sheltered in the camp deserves the solidarity of the international community.&#8221; Adequate funding is needed to implement this humanitarian response process. He expressed gratitude to the OIC and the European Union for taking the lead on this important human rights issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Highlighting the helplessness of the Rohingyas&#8217; long-term presence in Bangladesh, he further said, &#8220;We gave shelter to the Rohingyas who fled from Myanmar on humanitarian grounds. These displaced people always want to return to Myanmar.&#8221; To that end, we have undertaken multifaceted diplomatic efforts on both bilateral and multilateral fronts to create an environment conducive to safe and voluntary return to Myanmar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International Desk: Another recognition has come on behalf of the Rohingya people who have been tortured by the Myanmar army.
