The garment workers demanded a minimum wage of Rs. 23,000 per month. A group of eight members of the US Congress has written to the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) urging support for fair wages and protecting the labor rights of Bangladeshi workers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">On December 15, these eight members of the US Congress gave this letter to AAFA President and CEO Steven Lammer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to the letter, it is not possible to meet the rising cost of living with the recent wage increase for garment workers in Bangladesh. This has intensified the protest movement of the workers. The police resorted to violence to suppress the movement. At least four people were killed and numerous workers were injured; labor leaders were unjustly arrested and detained; even factories have been closed indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">In that letter, Congress members made several demands. These include-<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>1. They should call for an immediate end to the repression of the workers&#8217; movement.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>2. They should pressure the government and employers to accept the workers&#8217; demand for a minimum wage of Tk 23,000 and improve the wage determination process.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>3. They should commit to a long-term relationship with garment suppliers in Bangladesh. A 23,000 rupee increase in the cost of wages should be provided through the increase in the price of clothing.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>4. They maintain transparency and accountability in the supply chain of businesses and member companies to ensure labor and human rights, including the right to organize.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>5. They should give instructions to withdraw false cases filed against workers and union leaders.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>6. They should warn suppliers that filing false cases against and harassing workers and union leaders is not acceptable and may influence garment purchasing decisions.<br style=\"color: #252525;\" \/>7. By influencing factory owners personally and industrial organizations, it ensured that wages were paid to workers in recently closed factories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Additionally, the letter to members of Congress called for pressure on AAFA to ensure that the wage-setting process for workers in export processing areas is not as &#8220;unfair&#8221; as it is in overseas factories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The letter also said that the values that the United States practices in its own country should be reflected in other parts of the world. This movement of Bangladeshi workers is part of the global movement for fair wages and a safe working environment. To support the workers&#8217; rights movement in one country is to support it everywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">The letter was signed by Congressmen Ilhan Omon, James P. McGovern, Jan Schakowsky, Raul M. Grihalva, Barbara Lee, David J.
