Spread over an area of 300 square miles, this lake has a maximum water holding capacity of 52.70 lakh acre feet. And the minimum water holding capacity is 8.80 lakh acre feet. Kaptai Lake has a maximum water level of 109 feet above mean sea level (MSL) and a minimum water level of 71 feet above MSL.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">A statistic of how much water will be in the lake in any month throughout the year is available at the head office of the Lake Management Committee. According to the rule curve (water level), the water in Kaptai Lake is supposed to be 104 feet MSL. But currently, the water in the lake is 93 feet MSL. That is, there is currently 11 feet less water in Kaptai Lake than the quantity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant Manager Engineer ATM Abduzzah admitted that there is less water in the Kaptai Lake and said that currently the water in the lake is less than the rule curve. Out of 5 generators, two are operational now. 86 MW of electricity is being generated from these two generators. All the electricity generated is transmitted to the national grid. Karnaphuli water power station was established by creating an artificial reservoir with a dam at Kaptai. Electricity is being generated with the help of Kaptai Lake water at a very low cost through five generators. When the water in the lake is high, five generators are kept running simultaneously to generate a maximum of 242 MW of electricity. But when the water in the lake is low, the authorities do rationing, i.e., consume less water and produce electricity by keeping 1 or 2 generators running.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to a source in charge of the Karnaphuli hydropower plant, it is not unusual to have less water in Kaptai Lake now. From November to February, the water level in Kaptai Lake decreases. Because usually these 4 months do not rain. Due to non-rainfall and continued power generation from Kaptai Power Station, the lake water level continues to decrease. But sometimes there is no rain, even in March. As a result, the water holding capacity of Kaptai Lake has dropped to its lowest level. Generally, when the water level falls to 66 feet, power generation has to be stopped due to a lack of water. However, since the establishment of the power plant, such a situation has arisen only a handful of times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">According to Kaptai Lake Management Committee sources, this lake was established with the opportunity to use it as a multi-purpose reservoir. Apart from power generation, this reservoir was established keeping in mind various facilities, including fisheries development projects, navigation, and irrigation for agricultural purposes. If the water in the lake decreases, besides directly affecting power generation, there is a deadlock in all areas, including navigation and irrigation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525; text-align: justify;\">Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant Manager Engineer ATM Abduzzahe said Kaptai Lake is completely dependent on rain. When it rains, the water level in the lake increases.
