Cox’s Bazar Correspondent:<\/strong> There is no electricity on Maheshkhali Island in Cox’s Bazar since Cyclone Hamun hit. Electric TomTom cars are not running. CNG and other vehicles are collecting three times the fare on this occasion. Later on the afternoon of October 29, the upazila executive officer Miki Marma held a meeting with the transport leaders and ordered them not to collect the additional fare. But as a result of that order, the extra rent did not stop. The administration is silent about the suffering of the poor.<\/p>\n

It is known that on October 25, Maheshkhali Island, which was devastated by the storm on the night of October 24, was closed for traffic all day. On October 26, only the Badarkhali-Gorakghata main road was restored to normal traffic after trees and electric poles were removed from the road. But during the calamity, CNG drivers tripled the fare. Some TomTom cars plying on the road have also taken huge rents from the poor.<\/p>\n

CNG passengers Mizan, Rafiq, and Hassan said that the previous fare from Badarkhali to Gorakghata Bazar was Tk 100. I am now taking rent for 150 rupees. Now it is difficult to pay the rent as there is no income. Even after taking extra fare during the day, it is further increased in the evening. 400-500 Tk.<\/p>\n

On the ground inspection, it can be seen that the rent from New Bazaar to Gorakghata Bazaar is 10 taka per person, but since the cyclone, the rent is being taken at 20 taka per person, and at night it is taken at 30 taka. From Kalamarchara Bazar to Badarkhali Bazar, the fare per person is Tk 30, but the fare is Tk 50\u201360. Also, the drivers have increased the fare two to three times on every road in the village.
