Dhaka Bureau: Postbox, Dakghar, Dakpeon, or Dak Harkara These words are not very necessary in today’s era, but once people’s minds were on them, Waiting for the postman day after day. In the light of modernity, everything has now settled in the old memory. World Postal Day is today.

This year’s theme is Together for Trust: Collaborating for a Safe and Connected Future. Which in Bengali means ‘Together for Trust: Unite for a Secure and Connected Future’.

On October 9, 1874, the ‘Universal Postal Union’ was formed at an international conference held in Bern, Switzerland, with the participation of representatives of 22 countries. Later on, October 9, 1969, was declared World Postal Day by passing a resolution raised by this organization at the United Nations.

Bangladesh became a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1973 under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Since then, World Postal Day has been celebrated every year in the country.

Now in the digital era, the earlier application has been lost, but timely thinking is going on with the postal department. Accordingly, some activities have already been undertaken.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said last year that our biggest challenge was to bring the struggling postal service to a better position as the era of letters ended. We’ve already done a lot of that. The Post Office has now become a reliable institution for e-commerce.

Pointing out that there is no other institution in the country with the huge infrastructure and manpower of the post office nationwide, he said that, starting with frozen food, the post office has no alternative to deliver daily essential products to customers in remote and inaccessible areas.

Besides digitizing the postal system, he also informed us about digitizing the post office by imparting digital skills to the 45,000 working officials. It has created the basis for the digitization of production-oriented activities.
