Kushtia Correspondent: The 175th birth anniversary of the author of ‘Bishad Sindhu’ and the legendary novelist Mir Musharraf Hossain is on November 13. On this occasion, various programs have been organized for two days on November 13 and 14 at Mir’s Bastuvita in Lahinipara of Kumarkhali Upazila in Kushtia.

This time too, a simple ceremony organized by the district administration is going to be held at Mir’s Bastuvita. The long-standing demand of the locals to celebrate the birth anniversary at the national level has been ignored again and again.

The program includes discussion meetings, literary Mir’s memory, drama and cultural programs along with rural fairs.

Mir Musharraf Hossain was a Bengali novelist, dramatist and essayist. He is the author of many novels and books, including the classic Bishad Sindhu. Bishad Sindhui Mir’s literary masterpiece is an account of the battle of Karbala.

In 1890, he was the editor of the first Bengali language literary magazine in the then Muslim society. He has owned weekly magazines called ‘Ajijan Nehar’ and ‘Hitkari’.

There is no existence of his house in Lahinipara of Kushtia. He was born on November 13, 1847 in a noble family in Lahinipara village of Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia. After the birth of Mir Musharraf Hossain, his childhood was spent in this Lahinipara village. His father Mir Moazzem Hossain was a zamindar of the area. He died on 19 December 1911 at the age of 64 in Padmadi village of Kaliakandi upazila of Rajbari district. After his death, he was buried there next to his wife Kulsoom Bibi’s grave.

He has written numerous books including stories, novels, dramas, poems, autobiographies, essays and religious matters. Apart from this, Zamindar Darpan, Gazi Miar Bastani, Bibi Kulsoom, Ratnavati and Vasantakumari dramas are his unique creations. His literary works have greatly impressed Bengali Muslim readers. Apart from this, the Zamindar Darpan drama written by Mir inspired the farmers and subjects to stand against the oppression of the people at that time.

Mir Musharraf Hossain Secondary School and Museum have been established in Lahinipara in his name. Everything used by Mir, including books, is preserved in this museum.
