Lalmonirhat Correspondent: Due to the breach of the dam in the Teesta section of North Sikkim, heavy rains are pouring into the Bangladesh section. In this, the water of the river Teestar has started to rise in the Lalmonirhat part. Lalmonirhat District Administration and Water Development Board are making plans to warn the residents of Teesta Par due to the threat of severe floods. At the same time, they are asking the residents of the grasslands and river banks to move to safe places.
A water flow of 52.20 cm was recorded at the Dalia barrage point of Teesta at Hatibandha in Lalmonirhat on Wednesday (October 4) around 4:30 pm. Which is just 5 cm above the danger limit. Earlier, the water flow was recorded at 51.39 cm around noon. At that time, the water was flowing 76 cm below the flood line.
According to data from the Flood Forecasting Centre, the Central Water Commission of India (CWC) has damaged the Chungthang Dam on the Teesta River in North Sikkim, India. As a result, the water in the Teesta River is increasing rapidly. Meanwhile, the Sikkim region is predicted to receive heavy rains in the next 48 hours. Also, it has been raining since night in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, the Kurigram area, and the Rangpur region. It is believed that due to the continuous rise of Teesta water, severe floods may occur.
In the event of a flood, the lower areas of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur, and Gaibandha districts on the left and right banks of the Teesta will be inundated. There is a risk of extensive damage to various vegetable and crop fields. The district and upazila administration have been informed about the overall preparation to deal with the flood by warning. Also asked to take safe shelter by miking and make all kinds of preparations.
Aditmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer GR Sarwar said, We have asked the representatives of the river area to make them aware of the people of the river area by miking and in different ways. I am doing a thorough investigation. People in lower areas, including grazing areas, have been asked to move to flood shelters with their cattle. We are ready to handle any situation.
Sunil Kumar, executive engineer of the Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said that there will be floods again in the Teesta due to the upstream flow. We are keeping track of everything.
