Dhaka Bureau: There will be strict vigilance to ensure that terrorists do not rattle illegal weapons in the capital in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Also, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will do whatever it takes to keep the capital safe.
The newly appointed DMP Commissioner, Habibur Rahman, said this at a press conference organized at the DMP Media Center on Minto Road in the capital on Monday, October 2.
DMP organized this’meet the press’ exchange meeting with journalists for the first time after taking charge as commissioner.
DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman said that national elections are accompanied by the clanging of illegal weapons in the central capital. So that no one or any terrorist group can brandish illegal weapons in the coming elections. The policemen of the DMP have enough courage and strength to stop the clanging of illegal arms. This is our key challenge. Also, DMP will do whatever it takes to keep the capital safe.
Weapons are being openly displayed in different parts of the capital, and recently, one person was killed in a firing by terrorists in Tejgaon. What approach will you take as the new commissioner in this situation? DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman said in response to such questions from journalists, You know that bail is a judicial process. In this process, a criminal can get justice from the court. But the police have to act only if a person is involved in crime, abets crime, or organizes crime. In that case, I would like to say that a criminal, be it small or big, is determined to take action against them. And all units of the police have been directed to keep those who are out on bail under strict monitoring.
He said the Dhaka Metropolitan Police is a little different from other traditional crimes in our country. The casual duties of the police are to control theft, robbery, rioting, etc., and to maintain public order and provide security to people’s lives and property. But Dhaka Metropolitan Police is running in a new direction after changing the traditional style of the train. A major reason for this is the development of technology in the country and around the world. Cybercrime has become our new problem today after the theft and robbery. DMP is carrying out various activities to control this cybercrime. Different approaches have been taken.
Regarding the manpower of DMP, he said, Dhaka Metropolitan Police has 34 thousand manpower. If we divide that by the capital’s 2 crore and 24 lakh people, our manpower is very low, according to Mahar. Still, based on the way the members of DMP are carrying out their activities and suppressing crime efficiently, I think that DMP is more efficient and competent than other metropolitan police. I think DMP is much better, even if compared with foreign countries. He also said that we will take all possible measures to control the law and order situation in Dhaka.
