Dhaka Bureau: Obaidul Hasan has taken oath as the 24th Chief Justice of the country. On Tuesday (September 26) at 11 a.m. in the Durbar Hall of Bangabhavan, President Md. Sahabuddin administered the oath to the newly appointed Chief Justice. Earlier on September 12, the President appointed Justice Obaidul Hasan as the 24th Chief Justice of the country. This appointment will be effective from the date of taking the oath.
Justice Obaidul Hasan was born on January 11, 1959, in a noble Muslim family in Chaishashi (Hatnaya) village under Mohanganj police station in Netrakona district. His father’s name is Akhlakul Hossain Ahmed, and his mother’s name is Begum Hosne Ara Hossain. Senior Appellate Judge Obaidul Hasan joined the District Bar Committee after obtaining BSS (Hons.), MSS (Economics), and LLB degrees from Dhaka University as a lawyer in 1986. He was enrolled as a lawyer in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 1988 and as a lawyer in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 2005.
He served as Assistant Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General for 5 years, from 1996 to 2001. He joined the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh as an Additional Judge on June 30, 2009, and was appointed as a Permanent Judge in the same division on June 6, 2011. He joined the International Criminal Tribunal-II on March 25, 2012, as a member of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Trial of Organized Crimes Against Humanity during the War of Liberation. He was appointed Chairman of the Tribunal on December 13, 2012, and served until September 15, 2015.
During his tenure at the International Criminal Tribunal-II, 11 cases were adjudicated. He was appointed as a judge in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on September 3, 2020. He has authored two books titled ‘Picture of Indescribable Cruelty: Eighty-One Intellectual Murders—and Others’ and ‘Bangabandhu Bangladesh: A War Child Story and Others’. Before joining as a judge, Obaidul Hasan gained wide recognition as an accomplished litigator in civil, criminal, and constitutional matters. Obaidul Hasan served as a part-time teacher at Dhanmondi Law College for a long time.
