Dhaka Bureau: Cabinet has given final approval to the draft of the Ansar Battalion Act 2023. The Act provides for various punishments, including the death penalty and life imprisonment for rebellion or disorder. Besides, the provision of dismissal from the job has also been kept.
The draft law was approved in the Cabinet meeting on Monday, September 4. This meeting was held in the cabinet room of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s office in the morning. Later in the afternoon, Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain briefed the journalists on this matter.
The secretary said that in cases of chaos and rebellion, the provision of the death penalty has been kept in this law. Life imprisonment is also provided for. For the offense for which this Act provides the death penalty, there was no punishment under the old Act for the same offense.
He also said that two courts will be formed for the Ansar and Village Defense Forces. One will be headed by DG. The other will be headed by an additional DG.
