The Prime Minister arrived in Dhaka

Dhaka Bureau: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Dhaka from Johannesburg, South Africa. A regular Emirates Airlines flight carrying the Prime Minister and her entourage landed at Dhaka’s Shahjal International Airport on Sunday (August 26) morning. Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Zahid Tushar, who is accompanying the Prime Minister, confirmed this information.

The flight landed at Dhaka’s Shahjal International Airport at 8:32 am today after an hour layover at Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. Earlier on Saturday (August 26) at 6 p.m. Bangladesh time, the Prime Minister and his entourage left Johannesburg for Dhaka. The Prime Minister went to Johannesburg on August 22 to attend the 15th BRICS Summit at the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. South Africa hosted the 15th BRICS summit.

This is the first BRICS summit to be held in person since the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent global restrictions. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the conference.

On August 23, the Prime Minister addressed the ‘Bangladesh Trade and Business Summit, organized by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), as the chief guest. Later, he attended the ‘Bangladesh Ambassador Conference, organized by Bangladeshi ambassadors posted in African countries. In the afternoon, he held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Hilton Sandton. In the evening, the Prime Minister attended a cultural program and a state banquet hosted by the current BRICS Chairman and the President of South Africa.

On August 24, he spoke on behalf of Bangladesh as a member of the ‘New Development Bank of BRICS—Friends of BRICS Leaders’ Dialogue (BRICS-Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue), comprising representatives of 70 countries. On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, a bilateral meeting was held between Sheikh Hasina and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Mozambique President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi, Tanzanian President Dr. Saima Sulluhu, and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi at the Sandton Convention Center on Thursday. At the same location, Bangladesh Prime Minister and New Development Bank President Dilma Bana Rousseff met.

Foreign Minister Momen said that the dignitaries in the meeting praised the remarkable development of Bangladesh under the wise leadership of Sheikh Hasina. In the evening, Sheikh Hasina met Bangladeshi expatriates living in South Africa.
