Although known as a rebel poet in Bengali literature, he was also a poet, musician, novelist, storyteller, playwright, essayist, journalist, filmmaker, singer, and actor. He has created many diverse ragas and raginis and has held the Bengali music world in the highest esteem. Love, Betrayal, Communism, and Awakening poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s poems and songs inspired the nation in the struggle against exploitation and deprivation. His songs and poems were a source of inspiration during the liberation war. Nazrul’s poetry, songs, and literary works created a renaissance in Bengali literature. He was a pioneering writer on secular consciousness.
His writings played a great role in the development of non-communal consciousness in national life. His poems and songs have been showing people the way to freedom from exploitation and deprivation for ages. In the history of Bengali literature, the ‘rebel poet’ Kazi Nazrul Islam was the most colorful figure in the cultural world of the undivided Bengal of the subcontinent in the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century. Kazi Nazrul Islam’s role in freeing modern Bengali poetry from the artificiality of Rabindranath’s failed imitation was most fruitful. So he is the pioneer of modernity in post-Rabindra literature.
Through his poetry, songs, novels, and other writings and political activities, Nazrul was the strongest and most vocal voice against communalism, feudalism, imperialism, and colonialism in subjugated India, especially in undivided Bangladesh. Because of this, the British government confiscated his books and works and sentenced him to prison. Even in prison, the rebel Nazrul protested the prison tyranny of the foreign government by fasting for 40 days. National poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in Churulia village, Bardwan district, West Bengal, in 1306. Her nickname is ‘Dukhu Mia’. His father’s name is Kazi Fakir Ahmed, and his mother’s name is Zaheda Khatun. On May 24, 1972, the poet’s family came to Bangladesh on the initiative of then-Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The Government of Bangladesh granted Kazi Nazrul Islam the citizenship of Bangladesh and declared him the National Poet. He remained in Bangladesh until his death. Although his life span was 78 years, he fell ill in July 1942. After that, he spent 34 long years in unbearable silence.
