Dhaka Bureau: An uproar has started over the murder of a man with his hands and feet tied and a towel wrapped around his neck in Savar. The PBI, a specialized unit of the police, has launched an investigation. The police suspect that a militant group is involved in the incident. The name of the deceased person is Gholam Kibria (43). He is a former school teacher and the son of the deceased Shukur Munsi of Ward No. 1 of the municipality. Police recovered a note from the body. His body was recovered from his house in Ward No. 1 of Savar Municipality on Sunday (August 20) around three o’clock in the afternoon.

The note found next to the body read, ‘This person is homosexual, a police brother; that’s why we killed him. Brother also does illegal work. We are soldiers of Islam. On April 25, 2016, Zulhaj Mannan and his friend Mahabub Rabbi Tanoy were hacked to death by militants after entering the house of Kalabagan Leclerkus on charges of homosexuality. The banned militant group Ansar al-Islam claimed responsibility for the murder. Several units of the police have started investigating whether militants are involved in the incident that took place in Savar on Sunday. According to the locals, Golam Kibria was a former teacher at Savar Model School. At the end of his career, he taught privately at home. He lived alone in a room in that house.

Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Deepak Chandra Saha said that the body was recovered from the area based on the information of the locals. A note was found next to the body. The matter is being investigated. Initially, it was believed that he was killed by strangulation. The police are trying to identify those involved in the murder.

Identity of the deceased teacher and statements of relatives and locals:

He is the eighth of nine siblings and a former teacher at Savar Radio Colony Model School and College. Currently, he is said to be involved in the tuition and land trading businesses. Locals said that after divorcing his wife, he lived separately with his brothers in this house. He would not leave his room, even after waking up every morning, until Sunday afternoon. Later, he went to his room and found the door closed. Later, after going to the back door, it was opened, and inside, it was seen that the body was lying on the bed with its hands and feet tied with a lungi and a towel wrapped around its neck.

Apel Mahmud, the younger brother of the deceased, said, “My brother used to live in this house alone. He was a school teacher before, but now he was teaching in different places in Savar, besides doing land trading business. And because my brother had leg problems, he could not walk for long, so he used to travel everywhere in a certain rickshaw. Even this Sunday morning, my brother was preparing to go out. Normally, my brother used to wake up by 12 o’clock. But when he did not wake up even after noon, the neighbors went to the room and found my brother’s dead body.

Meanwhile, they found the lock of a steel cupboard inside my brother’s room was broken, and the contents were scattered. As far as I know, my brother had a lot of money saved up. Now we do not understand why or who killed my brother.
