The Crime Desk: The Omani police released Khadijatul Anwar Soni, Member of Parliament of Chittagong Reserved Women’s Constituency-19, 12 hours after he was arrested on Tuesday night for holding a political meeting without permission.
Khadijatul Anwar went to Oman on a personal visit on Tuesday and held a meeting with party leaders at Hafa House Mascot Hotel at night, said a diplomat who did not wish to be named.
He said that as it is illegal to hold a political meeting there without permission, he was detained by law and order forces during the meeting around 10:30 p.m. He was released on bail around 10 a.m. on Wednesday with the intervention of the Bangladesh Embassy in Oman.
However, his accomplices who were detained with him were not released. Khadijatul Anwar Soni, Member of Parliament for the reserved seat (Chittagong), was arrested by the law enforcement agencies of the country for attending a political meeting in the capital, Muscat, without the permission of the government of Oman. The incident took place at the local Haffa House Muscat hotel on Tuesday.
The embassy informally reported the matter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka. If you want to know, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, AK Abdul Momen, said on Wednesday that he does not have any official information about this.
Stating that an MP may be on a personal visit, the minister said that at the moment no party of MPs is on an official visit to Oman. Khadijatul Anwar Soni is the daughter of Awami League politician and former member of Parliament Rafiqul Anwar.
She became a member of the reserved women’s seat of the 11th National Parliament in 2019.
