Dhaka Bureau: Today, November 10, is Shaheed Noor Hossain Day. An unforgettable day in the movement-struggle to restore democracy in Bangladesh. On this day in 1987, Nur Hossain was martyred in the anti-dictatorship movement. This self-sacrifice of Noor Hossain accelerated the movement of democracy-loving people against the then dictatorship. On this day, Jubo League activist Noor Hossain came down to the streets as a living poster with thousands of protesting youths. On his chest and back was engraved the burning slogan ‘Democracy should be freed, tyranny should be destroyed’. The then dictator could not tolerate the fiery slogans of that young man who was fearless in the struggle to establish democracy. The dictator’s armed forces fired indiscriminately and grazed his chest. Jubo League leader Nurul Huda Babul and Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur farmer leader Aminul Huda Tito were also martyred in the firing. With the sacrifice of Nur Hossain, the anti-dictatorship movement became more vigorous and the struggle of the three alliances became irresistible. The anti-dictatorship movement intensified with the blood donation of Shaheed Noor Hossain and the dictatorial government fell on December 6, 1990 as a result of continuous struggle.
President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of Shaheed Noor Hussain Day.
President Md. In his speech, Abdul Hamid called on all the martyrs including Noor Hossain to continue the progress of democracy that they got in return for their sacrifices in the anti-dictatorship movement.
In the speech, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the great sacrifice of Noor Hossain and other martyrs accelerated the movement of democracy-seeking people against the then dictatorship. People from all walks of life organized street protests against tyranny. On the occasion of the day, he respectfully remembered all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for democracy including Noor Hossain.
On the occasion of the day, like every year, various political parties including Awami League, social and cultural organizations have taken detailed programs. The programs include wreath laying at Martyr’s Shrine today, tributes at Shahid Noor Hussain Square, milad and doa mahfil, special prayers, discussions, seminars etc. General Secretary of Awami League and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader MP in a statement called on all levels of people including the leaders and workers of Awami League and all its affiliated organizations to observe Shaheed Noor Hossain Day with due dignity.
