The Crime Desk: Today is World Population Day. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will celebrate the day through various programs in Bangladesh, like in other countries around the world. World Population Day was celebrated in 90 countries for the first time on July 11, 1990. This year the theme of the day is ‘Gender equality is power: the free speech of women and girls opens the door to the world’s unlimited possibilities’.

On the occasion of the day, President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages. Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Radio, and private channels will broadcast special programs. President Md. Sahabuddin said that, currently, half of the population in the country is female. Women should be more involved in national development. Besides, everyone must work together to ensure gender equality, i.e., equal rights for men and women.

In her speech, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said it is the need of the hour to harness the immense potential of women and girls by ensuring optimal utilization of programs related to maternal and child health and reproductive health care to build a healthy nation. He said that new steps have been taken for safe motherhood, adolescent health, women’s education, and women’s employment.

We have set up 18,500 community clinics and union health centers. This has made it possible to bring healthcare to the doorsteps of the rural poor.
