Ship explosion in Jhalakathi kills 4, burns 19

Jhalkathi Correspondent: The number of injured in the second round of explosions on the Sagar Nandini-2 ship in the Sugandha river in Jhalkathi has increased to 14. Of the 14, 12 are policemen, and two are ship’s crew. A total of 19 people have been killed and four have been burned so far in two consecutive days of explosions on the ship.

Two of those injured in the explosion last Monday (July 3) evening have been sent to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital for advanced treatment. One in Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and 11 in Jhalkathi Hospital.

Jhalakathi Fire Service and Civil Defense confirmed this information at night. Sagar Nandini-4 was removing oil from Sagar Nandini-1, which exploded in the first phase on July 1 while anchored in the Sugandha River in Jhalakathi around 6 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Sagar Nandini-2 exploded in the second phase.

The ship has been on fire since 6 p.m. (latest 1 a.m.) until the writing of this report. 11 units of the Fire Service, Coast Guard, and BIWTA are working to control the fire, said Jhalkathi Fire Service and Civil Defense Deputy Director Feroze Kutubi.

Nasir Uddin, OC of Jhalkathi Sadar Police Station, said that after the accident, the policemen were injured in the second round of explosions while engaged in security work during oil removal.

A naval contingent has already been deployed in the rescue operation. The force’s rescue ship, ‘Dolphin, reached the spot from Barisal. ISPR informed the media of this information.
