The Crime Desk: Voting has started in the Barisal and Khulna City Corporation elections. Voting started at 8 a.m. on Monday (June 12) and will continue until 4 p.m.
All 415 centers of Barisal and Khulna City Corporation are conducting electronic voting machine (EVM) voting. Before this, in the Gazipur city elections held on May 25, all centers also voted using EVMs.
The total number of polling stations in the Barisal city election is 126. Total voters in this city are 2 lakh, 76 thousand, and 298 people. Among them were 1 lakh, 37 thousand, 489 male voters and 1 lakh, 38 thousand, 809 female voters. Seven people are fighting for the post of mayor in the Barisal city election. Among them, four have been candidates for party elections.
They are Awami League candidate Abul Khair Abdullah (boat), Jatiya Party candidate Md. Iqbal Hossain (plow), Islamic Movement Bangladesh candidate Mufti Syed Faizul Karim (hand fan), and Zaker Party candidate Mizanur Rahman Bachchu (rose). The remaining three are contesting for the post of mayor as independent candidates. They are: Md. Ali Hossain Howlader (deer), Md. Asaduzzaman (elephant), and Md. Kamrul Ahsan (table clock). On the other hand, the total number of polling stations in the Khulna City election is 289. The total number of voters in this city is 5 lakh, 35 thousand, and 528 people. Among them were 2 lakh, 68 thousand, 833 male voters and 2 lakh, 66 thousand, 696 female voters.
Five people are fighting for the post of mayor in the Khulna city election. Four of them have been party candidates. They are: Awami League candidate Talukdar Abdul Khalek (boat); Jatiya Party candidate Md. Shafiqul Islam Madhu (plough); candidate of the Islamic Movement Bangladesh, A. Awal (hand fan); and Zaker Party candidate SM Sabbir Hossain (rose flower). Apart from this, SM Shafiqur Rahman (Table Clock) is contesting as an independent candidate. Apart from this, 134 candidates are contesting in 29 wards out of 31 general wards of Khulna City Corporation, and 39 candidates are contesting in 10 reserved wards. SM Khurshid Ahmed Tona in Ward No. 13 of the city and ZA Mahmud Don in Ward No. 24 were elected unopposed.
