Dhaka Bureau: Election Commissioner Alamgir said that neither the cabinet nor the government have reduced the powers of the Election Commission but rather increased them. He said this while talking to reporters in his office at the election building on Monday (May 22).
Md. Alamgir said earlier that we could have canceled the results of the required number or all the centers due to irregularities during the election. Now we wanted the power to cancel the results sent by all the centers without publishing the gazette if there are allegations of irregularities even after the election, or even to cancel the entire results if there are complaints of irregularities in all the centers. In that case, the government has asked to cancel as many as the evidence of irregularities will be found after an investigation. So if it is seen that a returning officer has sent a result of the entire vote, but before that we get complaints of center irregularities, then we will investigate without publishing the gazette.
If there are irregularities in all the centers, then the EC will have the power to cancel all the results and retake the vote in that constituency. Then the government did not reduce the power, but it increased it to some extent according to our needs. He said that the draft law on which the cabinet has given its opinion will be translated and presented with our recommendations. After that, it will go to the cabinet again and be passed in the parliament. It is time-consuming. So it is not possible to tell now how much our demand has been reduced or increased.
