nuclear scientist Wazed Mia’s death anniversary today

Dhaka Bureau: National nuclear scientist and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s husband Dr. MA Wazed Mia’s 14th death anniversary today is Tuesday (May 9). Wazed Mia, a scientist with a colorful career, was born on February 16, 1942, in Fatehpur village, Laldighi. This nuclear scientist died on May 9, 2009.

On the occasion of celebrating the day with due dignity, his birthplace in Laldighi Fatehpur village of Pirganj upazila and Pirganj upazila administration in Rangpur city, Dr. Wazed Mia’s family, Upazila Awami League and various organizations, including Dr. Wazed Smriti Sangsad (DWSS), Dr. Wazed Foundation, and Begum Rokeya University, will hold various programs including commemoration, Fateha reading, grave visitation, Milad Mahfil, and distribution of food among the poor.

Abu Saleh, the nephew of the deceased nuclear scientist, is General Secretary of the Pirganj Upazila Awami League and Mayor of Pirganj Municipality. Tajimul Islam Shamim said in the morning. The formalities of the program will begin by placing wreaths on the grave of MA Wazed Miah.

Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s son-in-law, MA Wazed Mia was the chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. He was the youngest of four sons and three daughters born to father Abdul Quader Mia and mother Mayjun Nesa. Wazed Mia, who has a colorful life, studied in the primary school of village 4th grade and the high school of Pirganj Thana till 6th grade. In 1952, he was admitted in 7th grade to the government district school of Rangpur city. He passed matriculation with distinction from this school in 1956. In 1958, he passed the HSC from Rajshahi Government College; in 1961, he passed the graduation (honors) examination from the Physics Department of Dhaka University; and in 1962, he passed the first class in the postgraduate examination.

He was a resident student of Fazlul Haque Hall at Dhaka University and was elected Vice President of the Hall Student Council in 1961–62 as a candidate nominated by the Chhatra League. In 1962, he was arrested in the anti-education commission movement. On April 1, 1963, he joined the service of the then-Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. He received his doctorate degree in physics from the ‘Diploma of Imperial College Course’ of Imperial College, London, Durham University, UK. After returning to the country, he was posted as a senior scientific officer at the Molecular Energy Research Center in Dhaka.

This nuclear scientist, honest, selfless, and unabashedly patriotic, got married on November 17, 1967, to Bangabandhu’s eldest daughter, Sheikh Hasina, the current Prime Minister. They have one son and one daughter. At work, the International Theoretical Physics Research Center of Trieste, Italy, gave him an associateship, post-doctoral research at the Daresbury Nuclear Laboratory in Washington, USA, higher training in nuclear reactor science at the “Molecular Research Center” in Germany, and he was engaged in research at the Delhi Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission of India. I wrote two books for university undergraduate students in physics, applied physics, and engineering. Apart from this, his notable books include ‘Some Incidents Around Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib and Bangladesh” and “Bangladesh Politics and Government Chart’.
